Visa Extension / Visumverlängerung

Visa Extension / Visumverlängerung
Shiraz, Iran
Shiraz, Iran 19.10.2013 Shiraz (IR) Km: 31570 Visa Extension / Visumverlängerung Today, the visa extension for Iran was on the agenda. LP says that it was easiest in Shiraz. Here is the exact sequence: – Entrance deposit cellphone and camera (for each time I entered the building)
– Main Counter Ask for visa extension and got a paper
– Management Office interview and explain why I want to extend 30 instead of the usual 15 days. Finally I got the permit.
– Main Counter I show the permission and got information about the bank account. I should bring a copy of the bank receipt and 2 Passport photos too.
– Bank deposit of 300,000 riyals, receive the receipt
– Hotel pick up 2 passport photos
– Main Counter the officer tells me that I need a copy of the bank receipt. This he told me before, but I thought the original is enough that I do not need.
– Copy office Make copies from passport, visa, bank receipt and application form
– Main Counter Fill out the application form
– Management Office I have to buy a ‘red file’
– Main Counter hand over all papers and waits until the file is created
– Management Office hand over the file and …. I don’t know for what
– Computer Office recording all the data’s
– Management Office hands over the file again. I have to wait, until payer time is over. I should come back again at 1pm
– Management Office 1pm, but the file is not read
– Main Counter I can pick up my passport and confirm this with a fingerprint and a signature.
Done. All the people were very kind to me and always said where I should go next. Time: ~ 5 hours, cost: ~ 11 USD .
For a long time I stuck to get the India visa and this is constantly like a burden on my shoulders. I am glad to have received the renewal for 30 days, because now new opportunities open up to the visa to obtain. Let’s see what follows in the next few days.
– Management Büro Ein ‚Red File‘ kaufen (Roter Kartonborgen)

Sightseeing Boycott / Sightseeing Boykott

Sightseeing Boycott / Sightseeing Boykott
Persepolis, Iran
Persepolis, Iran 17.10.2013 Persepolis (IR) Km: 31473 Sightseeing Boycott / Sightseeing Boykott I need urgently renew my Iran visa and wants to do in Shiraz. Unfortunately, the timing is bad again, because it’s Friday (Iran Sunday) when I arrive in Shiraz. So I drive very comfortable and want to look at some of the sights. In Pasagard is an ancient city and I driving there. At the ticket corner, I see that the locals pay much less than is written. I should then pay 150000 Rials (~ 5 USD ). I then make the cashier quickly realized that the Persians pay less and I wonder why. It comes back to me just a shrug. I wonder how much the Persians have to pay 20000 Rials (~ 0.85 USD ). I was really ****** off and I do not look at me Pasagard! When I put on the helmet comes the cashier over again and says, no problem’ and wants to give me the ticket for 2 Toman. I have no motivations anymore and go on to a more ancient ruined city of Persepolis. But the same happened here. The local pay 20000 Rials and I should pay 200’000. 10 times more! I’m again ****** off and I decide to boycotting sightseeing Iran from this point on. I then went in the nearby park and take a nap, because I have not slept so well last night. Later I set up my tent and eat dinner. A little bit later Dean, an Irish cyclist I’ve already met 2 times, arrived and together we stay in the park.

Old City in Iran / Alte Stadt im Iran

Old City in Iran / Alte Stadt im Iran
Yazd, Iran
Yazd, Iran 15.10.2013 Yazd (IR) Km: 31043 Old City in Iran / Alte Stadt im Iran I spent a quiet night in the desert. At the beginning it has not threaded properly and the sand finds its way everywhere. I do not want to imagine how it is in a real sandstorm. I continue towards Yazd, one of the oldest city in Iran. And I beat another record: cheapest accommodation so far with 5$ (breakfast included), 25 USD cents for a liter of petrol. In comparison, a bottle of water cost 35 USD cents! One day I’m doing sightseeing and I rest the other and forge plans for the future.

Stay in the desert / Übernachtung in der Wüste

Stay in the desert / Übernachtung in der Wüste
Varzaneh, Iran
Varzaneh, Iran 12.10.2013 Varzaneh (IR) Km: 30803 Stay in the desert / Übernachtung in der Wüste On the way to Yazd, I pass a desert with large sand dunes. First, I still try on a dry salt lake to drive. Except for the return trip everything went well. It has not rained for a whole summer, but only a few centimetres below the tried out ground is a thick layer of mud. In this I have exactly dug my bike. This time of the most terrible one and I had to remove everything possible from the motorbike to reduce weight. I could just dig out the bike and continue. I went to stay in the desert nearby and first pitched the tent next really big sand dunes.

Esfahan, Iran
Esfahan, Iran 9.10.2013 Isfahan (IR) Km: 30517 Reaching Isfahan / Treffe in Isfahan ein Have survived the night in Arak and go into the wilderness by a detour into the mountains. Stunning scenery again. Iran is really great and the people very nice. On a small street keeps me at a shepherd, pointing to his empty tank of the motorcycle. I then give him the contents of the replacement canister (4 liters at $ 25 cents!) And he is grateful. Somewhat later realize that I myself have almost out of gas and possibly will stop somewhere. It is sufficient to reach the next service station of the Red Cross where I spend the night. Actually, I wanted to ask if I could set up my tent behind the house. But I was immediately invited to stay in the house and they served me food and drinks. But I have hardly found rest because everyone wanted to talk to me, even they could not speak English and I’m not Farsi. A little later the police came, because somebody called them and said that I stay here. I believe that in such situations the police must check the people and visa. But it was no problem. On the contrary, I believe the chief police officer wanted to see a tourist and his bike. I asked if I could take a picture of them all and he was the first one who sat next to me. The next day, a large adoption and I left the friend from the Red Cross. I also find a gas station and soon as I glide gently towards Isfahan.
In Isfahan, I notice that there are many tourists, mosques and many others with their big cameras photographs. I love the oriental bazaars and look at the mosques, but … but I experience nothing. The best experiences are mostly in the countryside, when I unexpectedly to meet local people. Such heartfelt encounters I’ve never seen in Switzerland (Western Europe). I’ve stopped counting how many times I was invited to tea or food. It is often the poorer people then prepare a Sunday dinner (with meat or chicken) and I see that they almost cannot afford. There seems to be an honor for them, a well-traveled to hospitalize.
So here’s a great big thank you to all known and unknown, for the great encounters and invitations. Thank you !

Little incident / Kleiner Vorfall

Little incident / Kleiner Vorfall
Arak, Iran
Arak, Iran 5.10.2013 Arak (IR) Km: 29865 Little incident at the gas station / Kleiner Vorfall an der Tankstelle Before leaving Tehran, I ‘m drive in the mountains around Tehran. Have once again, found a great landscape. On a pass I am invited by Atefeh and her family for lunch. But then I underestimated the time I’m in the dark in Tehran. On the road to Arak, at a gas station there are communication problems, but I can solve with my notepad and pencil. However, I no longer get back my pencil. Because I want to have the pencil again, it begins a longer discussion about who has the pencil. One gets the manager and together we look at the surveillance video. Unfortunately you cannot see exactly, but suspect who had the pencil last. After a half hour discussion the owner of the gas station comes and tells me that unfortunately there are a few “Ass… “. Same to the gas station attendant and he will lose his job next month! Now you thinking sure why this story for a pencil? It is the first time that what has been deliberately stolen from me and it’s the principle. I also have to keep my material care, as I have only limited budget.
In the evening looking at Arak for an accommodation, but cannot find a hotel that fits into the budget. And so I ‘m going in the dark in a park and set up my tent. but I do not feel comfortable in this situation.

Tehran, Iran
Tehran, Iran 3.10.2013 Tehran (IR) Km: 29123 Visa hell part 2 / Visum Hölle Teil 2 It is the continuation of attempts to get a visa for India in Tehran. You can see part 1 under: http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/infiniteroad/1/1380874587/tpod.h tml Day 5: I meet with the consul and he denied me the 6 months duration. He can give me a maximum of 30 days. 30 days to travel around India is definitely too less and all my planning are shi… I tell him I need to think about it first and see what I can do. Throughout the afternoon I try to find new routes and make a new plan. Day 6: I go to the embassy early . But in vain “Because holidays closed today “ Day 7: Again, I go to the embassy early and stand at the counter 1 and I hope the secretary let me in and I can do the paperwork. I queue the worst 30 minutes of my life. Absolute disrespect of the others. Jostle with physical contact, one even has pressed his mouth against my shoulder. When I was the first in the queue, another gives his papers from behind me to the counter and wants to cut the line. The whole time, permanently pushing from the others. But the secretary sends me to the 2 counter. This means waiting one hour more and then …… then they cannot find my papers! I have to fill it again and print out everything. I do this immediately and try to get an exception in the afternoon and give the papers outside the opening times. But the counter is closed and I have to come back when it is open. Day 8 and 9: Weekend in Iran and it will not work at the embassy. I break this exercise now and I’ll see for opportunities. Let’s see what the next day’s brings. Mal sehen was die nächsten Tage bringen.

Visa hell part 1 / Visum Hölle Teil 1

Visa hell part 1 / Visum Hölle Teil 1
Tehran, Iran
Tehran, Iran 1.10.2013 Tehran (IR) Km: 28949 Visa hell part 1 / Visum Hölle Teil 1 One reason that I came to Tehran, an India visa is applied for. So far I got the visa relatively easily, what changes now complete: Day 1: Friday 17:00, arriving in Tehran. By this I know that I chose a bad time, because the embassies are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Day 2: As I have time I fill out the online application and save it as a PDF. With the USB stick I am looking for a shop where I can print out the application form. I’m still reading that I need a birth certificate, but it will not try this. Day 3: In research I find out that the Indian Embassy is open on Sunday? The reason I find out also. In Iran, the Friday is the ‘Sunday’ and Saturday’s there to have a weekend. So I go immediately to the Indian Embassy and intention to deliver the documents. They told me then that I need a ,Introduction letter’ of the Swiss Embassy and a need ,telex form’. I go to as Swiss embassy, but I cannot find them first. The street names are not unique in Tehran and the desired street there several times. After I got the letter I go back to the Indian Embassy. Unfortunately, too late, as it only has 10 to 12 clocks open. Day 4: I put myself in the queue and give the documents from a half hour later. The woman then tells me that the consul wants to talk with me, because I entry India by land and not by plane (my motorbike unfortunately cannot fly). In the hall I wait 1 ½ hours and they tell me that the consul today have no time. When he had time, I ask. We do not know and the embassy will call me then. In the evening, I get the call that I should come by 11-12 clock tomorrow.

To be continued … Fortsetzung folgt…

Man and woman / Mann und Frau

Man and woman / Mann und Frau
Tehran, Iran
Tehran, Iran 27.9.2013 Tehran (IR) Km: 27958 Man and woman / Mann und Frau After a restless night, I continue towards Tehran. From the Caspian Sea I have to climb first 3000 meters of altitude. Again it an enchanting landscape. Unfortunately, the traffic is increasing more and more towards Tehran, because today, Friday, it’s Sunday for the Iranians and many go to the mountains for picnic. More and more I approach the giant metropolis of Tehran and find a hotel in the centre. The traffic is quieter than I thought, but to live as a pedestrian is very dangerous because the car and motorcyclist (~ 150cc) only interested if it has more space in front, if so is being driven. It is not interested in the driver whether the signal light is red, pedestrians on the zebra stripes or a cop on the corner. If a gap is free and will be driven! OK, the pedestrian is not interested in whether or not red signal. To go across the street is a bit of cat and mouse game.
Striking in Iran is that without exception, all women wear a veil and comply with the strict dress code. At the bus stops is a separate column for the women. This makes sense because the women can only sit in the rear part of the bus. In Kurdistan, I’ve even seen that women do not eat in the restaurant with the men together and have to stay in the dingy back room. Unfortunately, this always takes place also with us in Switzerland. So there are already women compartments in trains and parking areas for women.
The first mission in Tehran I want to finally repair the laptop. The idiot in Turkey has broken the power supply and soldered a connector type, which can hardly be found. After much searching I decide to operate the power supply without the additional electronics and let the connector solder directly to the cable. This works now and I can reload the laptop reasonable, as long as I do not know, however.

Ramsar, Iran
Ramsar, Iran 26.9.2013 Ramsar (IR) Km: 28643 Dangerous campsite / Gefährlicher Zeltplatz In Tabriz I meet up with Julian and Elli, who I met in Bishkek (KS) and both are many years by bicycle on the road around the world. Together we look at one of the oldest bazaars (over 1000 years old) and I think it is also one of most charming bazaar. I love the oriental bazaar.
My journey takes me over 2500 meters above sea level lying pass, to the Caspian Sea. When I shut down is a high plateau 1,000 meters below me. Such a tremendous view from the top into the wide I’ve ever seen and it is difficult to show with photos. A nice feeling to cruise down that great pass road and enjoy the fantastic scenery.
The second Night on the Caspian Sea I wanted to spend at the beach again. But I underestimated the time and it gets dark at 6 o’clock. Just before dusk I find a place at a river near to the sea. When I set up everything and the begun to cook dinner, 2 men come with the truck to me and advised me strongly don’t to stay here. I thought it cannot be that bad and I did not like to pack everything and to continue in the dark. They have repeatedly told me then “no sleep”. One has called a colleague who may be a little better English and kept saying “Danger, do not sleep here”. This has me worried a little bit and of course it starts raining at this moment. I thought, “take no risk” and have packed again and drove to the next private campground and have the 2nd Time everything set up. I then cooked the second Part of the dinner and have half the night listening to the raindrops on the tent.

Felted / Wurde gefilzt

Felted / Wurde gefilzt
Tabriz, Iran
Tabriz, Iran 23.9.2013 Tabriz (IRQ) Km: 27958 Felted / Wurde gefilzt Before I can leave Iraq again I still have a long way up the mountain. Here I see hundreds of trucks awaiting customs clearance, which is located on the pass. When I arrived with the motorbike welcomed me warmly militaries. Then came one who can speak English and he has been with me through the whole customs clearance and organized everything that I got my exit stamp. All things were not as nice as he said I would have to carry the entire luggage into the hall to check. I then laughed at him until I noticed is serious. But then I laughed again and said ‘no’. He noted that there is a lot of effort to carry any baggage so far and called his boss. He said ‘ok, we check anything here’. So I had to open each bag and unpack. After the check my luggage was distributed over the parking area and he stressed me out that I had to go immediately to the Passport Control. Surprised, because I had to wait at customs otherwise always very long, I pack everything back together quickly.
Admission to Iran was also worth telling. Again, very friendly people and many militaries quickly around my bike, and just as many questions about the motorbike. For the passport check the sent me to a container in a construction site. The container I could only reach by going in a pit and had to climb on wobbly metal bars (see photo). A police officer checked my passport and lifts the plunger far into the air and said, ‘Welcome to Iran’ and slammed the same rubber stamp with a lot of joy in my passport. At the next station they sent me to another shabby container. Broken windows, an old table and chair, little light and a lot of dirt are my memories of it. I gave the man my Carnet de Passage and he began to look for in a huge stack of books. Then he asked me, ‘Iran finish’? What Iran finish. We tried for 10 minutes to talk, but could not. But one would already make a stamp on the export list of the Carnet and I could I just stop you. What I need is a stamp on the import list. Then we went to another office and there was someone speaks English. Great I thought then it can go more quickly now. The officer then chatted for a while about something and brought me tea to drink. I think that just want to try out their English, but all very polite and nice. In the end, I find out that he wanted to know the expiry date of the Carnet. Then we went back into the other container and he was looking once again one of the great books. Finally found, he wrote in the book different things and gave me a pass. When I was able to continue driving, a taxi driver pointed out that I have to go 500 meters again to an office to pick up one more stamp. For whatever reason?
In Urmia I wanted to go into the Biker Guesthouse but the owner was not there. A colleague of him said I could wait for him in his house and then asked me if I wanted dinner. I first said I would to have a bed first. In the meantime, his mother was already cooking and I enjoyed a fantastic meal. I could stay with Ali then also. Thank you for the invitation, Ali.
Then I go back to visit an almost dry lake to Tabriz to see the famous bazaar. Was Iran finish.

Many controls / Viele Kontrollen

Many controls / Viele Kontrollen
Soran, Iraq
Soran, Iraq 20.9.2013 Soran (IRQ) Km: 27388 Many controls / Viele Kontrollen Wake up early and have generally not been sleeping well, because some guys who watched football up at 3 o clock. After packing I drive off and many people have been watching. I think not many fully loaded motorbike drives thru this city and they are just interested in what this crazy boy what’s. The guy still wants fuel gasoline. $ 40 cents for a liter, which is great. In Turkey, I paid $ 90 for a full tank and now it’s a gift.
Ride through a charming landscape, but there is every 20 to 30 Kilometer a checkpoint (see on video). Suddenly a military man wants to see my passport at a checkpoint. Before, I never had to show the passport. This made me insecure and I even give him a copy. But he was not satisfied and sent me to his colleagues. These say they want the passport and not a copy. Then there the boss came out. In the meantime, others gave me water which reassured me, not because of the water itself, but that they are not want money. I took out the passport, after the officer asked x-times. He briefly controlled the visa and says ok and goodbye.
In the evening I went to the bazaar and was looking for a snack. I tried a kebab on Kurdish kind …delicious …A soup, a cooled mineral water and a small plate with some vegetables. All this for $ 1.61
I leave tomorrow Kurdistan one day earlier than I had planned. The reason is that elections are on Saturday and Sunday is a curfew announced.

Go to Iraq / Gehe in den Irak

Go to Iraq / Gehe in den Irak
Duhok, Iraq
Duhok, Iraq 18.9.2013 Duhok (IRQ) Km: 27388 Enter Iraq / Bin zum ersten Mal den Irak The departure of Cizre delayed because I was still an hour talking with a man. I talked with an Iranian who tells me a lot about the countries and conflicts. This is exactly the situations that I love to get an impression of the countries and peoples on site. In the news we hear bad news only and gets a false picture from this countries.
Crossing the border into Iraq went smoothly. Only in the Turkish departure they asked me about the passenger list. Did he not see that I am alone, I asked. No, he needed a passenger list! How would I now get a passenger list? In addition, my passport was stamped and I’m already out from Turkey. Because I do not want to go back to turkey, I played the stupid tourist (I understand nothing and speaks only Swiss German). It also helped this time, and then after 10 minutes I was able to continue.
So I can travel to Iraq, but first I need a visa, which I can get at the border. Where there was a short interview, where, why, etc., and then I got the visa in my passport stamped. At the Custom Control I get a paper and an officer writes what in Arabic script. With the paper I now should go to an office over the street. After I first walked into the wrong office 3 times, I find the right place. In the office were a lot of cash machines and I thought I had to buy an insurance or something else and pay money. But no, one writes more to the paper and gives me back. I go back and one officer tells me I should follow him. He is about 5 times from switch to switch and at the end I am back out without anyone written something on the paper. After a while, someone else came and gave me a entry permit. Now I can go on and enter the Kurdish part of Iraq.
I drive to the next town and find a hotel. I wonder what awaits me tomorrow.

Friend or enemy / Freund oder Feind

Friend or enemy / Freund oder Feind
Cizre, Turkey
Cizre, Turkey 17.9.2013 Cizre (TR) Km: 27261 Friend or enemy / Freund oder Feind I had a quiet night and only sometimes the shepherd was barking. The stray dogs are then usually bark back . After 2 cups of coffee I look to the tires. Everything is ok and then I ‘m going in a new direction, go to the Syrian border.
After 40 days, Turkey I need something new. Turkey is a great country, with its rich culture and friendly people. All? No, not all ad you can read in my first report on Turkey. Moreover, one has told me in the bike shop that his broken hand comes from the fact that he hit someone else. Most they immediately invite you for drinking tea. After I turned down an invitation once because I did not want to leave the tent and the motorbike, he came back in the evening with a thermos again so we could drink tea together. If you managed to be friends with the Turks, you can get almost anything you want. If you say the wrong, you get a bonk on the nose quickly.
There is another feature of the Turks I have discovered: Everyone needs to make noise once each day. Does not matter how.
In Cizre I meet unexpectedly at a German couple (Panny and Simon , http://krad-vagabunden.de) their abroad with the motorcycles for about 3 ½ years. He tells me that they just come from Iraq and this was the last puzzle part I was looking for. I plan to go to the northern Iraq for some time and meet now who was there. Too bad we did not have more time to chatting to exchange information and to tell stories.
In Cizre you feel a tense situation. There were in the past always conflicts between the Kurds and the police and military. A man tells me, he had to hide in the hotel while the tear gas came into the room. Then he could see several hours any more. Next here are many Syrian refugees who have nothing and begging and steal. Also tonight, the police and military are present with 6 water cannons trucks on the big intersection. But today is Soccer Champions League on TV, everything stay calm.
The next morning I start the machine and the project Iraq.

Fuck / Fuck

Fuck / Fuck
Andyaman, Turkey
Andyaman, Turkey 15.9.2013 Andyaman (TR) Km: 26738 **** / **** I’ve had a cool night, but the view compensate up for it as well the fried eggs and coffee. After I packed up and want to start, I see once again a flat tire. This time the worst kind. When searching last night a campground I’m probably driven by a field with bushes full of thorns. Now all these thorns stuck in my tire. Hundreds, if not thousands. First, I think I have patched the tube quickly, but then I realize that all the thorns must out of the tire, otherwise they will be pushed further while driving and I have a flat tire again. After 3 hours of work I have all visible thorns pulled out. On the fly I have 8 holes found in the tube and do not spend the effort to repair the holes and put a new hose. When checking the tire from the inside I found about 10 thorns which are penetrated to the hose. When mounting the front wheel comes into my mind that the rear tire is also full of thorns. As well all the thorns must go of the tire even I have no puncture on the rear wheel-> 3 more hours of work. At 3 o’ clock I then drive off with two perforated tires and blisters on the hands. I stop on a river and I’m immediately invited for dinner. Tired and with an uneasy feeling that I have overlooked a thorn I go to sleep next to a herd of sheep. Let the watchdogs me sleep peacefully?

Cappadocia / Kappadokien

Cappadocia / Kappadokien
Ürgüp, Turkey
Ürgüp, Turkey 13.9.2013 Andyaman (TR) Km: 26539 Cappadocia / Kappadokien After the maintenance of the motorbike I’m doing a small tour of Cappadocia. Great area and it is worth to come here and to see the stone and rock formations.
This evening I watch to the cats and the dog of the owner of the hostel. When the dog sees a cat on the premises of the hostel, he sprints barking towards the cat. Because the cat is much faster than the dog, she jumps just before the stairs to the next wall and the dog cannot stop anymore. Then you hear how his claws drag on the smooth marble and then he tumbles down the stairs. I think the cat are not only faster but also smarter and pass the time with the “cat and dog game”. Funny is that the dog starts also when people makes “bsbsbs” to attract a cat. Thus, to pass the time, I’m and other guests play the “Man and Dog game”.
The next morning I drive off, but still must first fill of my water reserves (with the usual ~ 35 degrees I fallow only 6 liters). But then let’s go. Glorious as the wind blows towards me and I can enjoy the beautiful scenery. Choose an extravagant place to stay overnight.

Adjust valves / Ventile einstellen

Adjust valves / Ventile einstellen
Ürgüp, Turkey
Ürgüp, Turkey 12.9.2013 Ürgüp (TR) Km: 25880 Adjust valves / Ventile einstellen For some time the great service on the bike is due. Today I have the motivation to start this project. In the entrance of the hostel I start dismounting the motorbikes. The first thing I notice that the air filter is pretty dirty and I should clean it more often in the future, respectively has to change. The valve gap is still in tolerance and I have less to readjust. In Antalya, the motorbike has stopped once due the lack of fuel, although there was gasoline in the tank. At that time I have noticed that the vacuum hose is brittle and so no fuel can be pumped from the tank. Now I change this hose too, but must still go to buy a connector. The chain lock is also changed because I got a new only day ago and I have made the old chain lock to the new chain.
When checking the motorbike, I note that the tank has a lot of drag marks. Which may in no case more scrub, otherwise the tank gets a hole. I’m making a provisional fix and will think what I can do later.
Also, the aluminum case will not hold a long time. I mount the tension belt new that I mount some month ago.
The whole job takes 2 days and I have not seen anything of Cappadocia. Let’s see if I can still make some nice photos.

Broken Laptop / Laptop defekt

Broken Laptop / Laptop defekt
Ürgüp, Turkey
Ürgüp, Turkey 10.9.2013 Ürgüp (TR) Km: 25880 Broken Laptop / Laptop defekt Before I left from Antalya, I have to clean and oil the chain on the bike. So I could start as always with dirty fingers. 2 weeks ago my gas canister broke, and at a gas station I bought a new one. I have again selected a 5 liter canister and saw that he was much less than my old one. I told it to the seller and he sad: no, no its 5 liters. I smiled and said he should fill it. It then showed 3.8 liter at the pump. It’s also good. 4 liters is enough and I carry a kilo less.
In the evening, I discovered that the plug in the laptop is broken and I cannot charge it. Immediately I was looking for a specialist to repair it. The next day, the owner of the hostel helped me and we found someone who can fix it. In the evening I get the laptop back and realize that it is not working properly. So the next day again to the workshop and the discussion begins. “I did everything right”. When I then removed the tape from the new plug, I saw that he has tinkered and soldered incorrectly. In addition, the LED does not work anymore. The Turks do not like it, when you tell them that they made bullsh… It’s annoying that you have to do everything yourself or constantly check. I also give no parts more out of hand because they do not handle it carefully and do more damage than repair. They often look at me as silly ‘tourist’ and I need them then say that they are idiots. This strikes me at the moment still difficult.
My passport, I sent for a visa home, was also forwarded incorrectly. Sent it back to Switzerland was necessary because for this country, it’s only possible to get the visa in your home country. Now I have to wait until the passport arrives back in Turkey.

Vacation / Ferien

Vacation / Ferien
Antalya, Turkey
Antalya, Turkey 7.9.2013 Antalya (TR) Km: 25015 Vacation / Ferien I spent now one week in Antalya to go for holiday. Yes, I need also holiday, because traveling is a lot of ‘work’. This includes basically the project management, to plan the route, to have the budget under control, get visa and spare parts, obtain replacement material, security check (I’m getting closer to Syria), reports and write mail, learn languages, repairs and maintenance on the bike, making data backup. There is also daily work, find a place to stay, set up tents and break or looking for accommodation, short check of the motorcycle, cooking, laundry, shopping, personal care, and much more. I did not think that these works require so much time and so it’s nice, sometimes to make holyday an do nothing for a week.

Policestories / Polizeigeschichten

Policestories / Polizeigeschichten
Antalya, Turkey
Antalya, Turkey 29.8.2013 Antalya (TR) Km: 24753 Policestories / Polizeigeschichten Because I had plenty of time yesterday, I adjust the front wheel motorbike. First, all the spoke nipples spray with WD40 and then remove carefully so that no spoke breaks. The motorbike now travels a lot quieter than before.
On the way I am always stopped by the Turkish police. But they are great and they are always ready for a little fun (they do not know, of course). Because I know that they want to check vehicle- and motorbike documents, I am taking like a tourist and of course I do not understand them. If a police officer has called his colleagues, because he cannot Swiss German, the colleague tries it with English. But in this situation I do not understand English. They tries in different way to say that he wants see my vehicle registration and driver license. One has ever come out the phone and started the online translator. Another police officer showed me his driver’s license. I have the driver’s license looked extensively at and ridiculed him for his photos. I suppose it is usually my copies of the documents and this one has me already ripped out of my hands because he can finally control. The Swiss Pass is the only one in the world is written in 5 languages. It is amazing that they still ask where I come from. Of course they ask in English, “Where you from?” If I answer in English “Switzerland” they have still no plan about where I’m from! So, the fun goes on and I say “from Switzerland” in all 5 languages listed on the pass and in Russian, that I may become a little. Because they do not want to lose face they are sweating in the sweltering heat before the protocol and ask each other “Do you know where?” Then I help them with an “İsviçre” to make them happy and they write down any number and let me go.
I am going to chalk terraces in Pamukkale . Because too little water, the terraces are not so spectacular and I again photographed old stones. Just above the chalk terraces lies the ancient city of Hierapolis and a well-preserved and extensive necropolis.
My path leads me on to Antalya. I will here make a good holiday time to be fit for the next rigors of border crossings, visas stress and police officers. Natürlich fragen sie auf Englisch, „Where you from”?

Again wonder oft he world / Wieder ein Weltwunder
Bodrum, Turkey
Bodrum, Turkey 25.8.2013 Bordum (TR) Km: 23980 Again wonder oft he world / Wieder ein Weltwunder Because it is very comfortable on the great beach, I stay another day and only get up to shi… and shopping. The nearby village has a great market and I buy to lot once again. The next day I go on to the next ancient wonder of the world: Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. Again, many old stones to see and not much more. But I was there! I am looking to stay at the beach again and I sunk my motorbike again. I thought I can drive on the gravel. This time it’s not possible to get the bike out of the gravel alone and I start to unload all the luggage. A man passes and stops. He will help me without that I have only spoken a word or gesture to him. Together we can bring the deeply buried motorbike on the road. The other side of the Turks! I give him my previously purchased cool water bottle and thank him very much. At the next beach I was invited to tea and grilled chicken again. I am glad to be invited to tea, but am thinking of chicken and did a little afraid of the usual diarrhoea.

Ephesos , Turkey 23.8.2013 Ephesos (TR) Km: 23759 Wonder of the world / Weltwunder Visit the Temple of Artemis, or what’s left of it today. In any case, I am in the middle of one of the seven antique wonders of the world. A great feeling! Then I visit the ruins of Ephesus. Also there is not much more and it definitely has too many tourists. But I’m here anyway I make some photos. I think about, how far I want still to ride today. Because I have enough time I’ll stop driving and just go to the huge, almost empty beach and set up my tent.

Troy, Turkey 20.8.2013 Troy (TR) Km: 23320 Important decision / Wichtige Entscheidung For some time I prepare an important decision. I have installed on my route to Turkey in order in the event that something is wrong or I do not feel comfortable on the trip, I could quickly return home. In Troy, I make the decision not to redeem this option. I will after I came very close to Europe, again heading east and continue 🙂
There is now much to organize, so I still need different visa. But first I need to define by which countries I want to go.

Change tire, second try / Pneuwechsel 2. Versuch

Change tire, second try / Pneuwechsel 2. Versuch
Ankara, Turkey
Ankara, Turkey 18.8.2013 Ankara (TR) Km: 22497 Change tire, second try / Pneuwechsel 2. Versuch I chose a place to sleep in a small field next to a wheat field. The advantage was that I could use leftover straw to build me a mattress. The downside was that the farmer collects all the straw bales in the middle of the night. Lot of noise and uncertainty whether I have to go -> but was not a problem. I wanted to look the same day in Ankara for a Motor Bike shop to go to buy tires. I find on the internet and drive to a BMW dealer. The dealer then said that they do not screw around in non-BMW motorcycles. I said no problem, I’ll mount the tires themselves. But they have no tires for this bike, he added. I then told him that it is the same as tires for BMW (which he also knew, of course) and he should order. He then said that I should try in the Kawasaki center! BMW’er, a special species…. In the Kawasaki center they order tires for me and also the rear sprocket. On Saturday, everything should be there. On Saturday around noon I go back to Kawasaki Centre in order to change the tires. I want a precaution do everything myself, but realize that the mechanics are really good and help me in mounting (not like the semi-idiots in Samsun). When I check the sprocket, I realize that I have to change it too. When fitting the chain then I realize that this is too short. Tip to all ‘long distance driver’ always check everything very carefully before you buy something. In the workshop, but they can help me and give a link in a chain. With another chain lock I can mount this link. With new tires I drive calmed down to the hostel. The ride over the Caspian Sea, the visa for the next country and the tire change took less time than expected. I now have enough time to do something else. Let’s see what comes to my mind what I can do. Tip an alle anderen ‘long distance driver’ immer alles ganz genau prüfen bevor man etwas kauft.

All wrong / Alles falsch gemacht

All wrong / Alles falsch gemacht
Samsun, Turkey
Samsun, Turkey 13.8.2013 Samsun (TR) Km: 22017 All wrong / Alles falsch gemacht In the morning all alone stood at the campsite and just drank coffee and written messages. Except the sound of the sea and the birds it was quiet, I could very well relax and enjoy the morning with a very calm disposition. After a great ride along the Black Sea coast, I found motorcycle shop in Samsun. I thought, why not now change the tire and save a day in Ankara. So far so good and the mechanic said everything was okay and took first tee times. Then he removed the tire and took it away and after an hour he came back. He immediately began to assemble, but I quickly realized that what was wrong. Here is the list of what the mechanic has it all wrong:
1st – Wrong profile. It was a road tire, but I need something for gravel roads and sand.
2nd – Wrong dimensions. He has to put up a small tire. It’s not because of a security risk but the contact surface is much smaller which turns out to be unfavorable in the sand. He then showed me another 2 tires with the right dimensions. But both were already used. I asked what else he wanted for it. 8% discount for a used! Definitely not.
3rd – One tire was 9 years old. You should use so old tires.
4th – Tire is mounted incorrectly. It is supposed to have a direction of rotation of the tire. This he has not observed.
5th – I told him he should 2 new hoses be used, as the hoses are already patched once each. On the valve I saw that old were mounted. During disassembly, I saw that the tube was patched already 2 times. In this case I could keep my old one, because they were patched only once.
6th – Wrong dimensions of the hose.
7th – Installed old valve and keep my new one.
8th – Cap was no longer there. I have a special, with which you can also unscrew the valve.
9th – When changing the tire uses no backing. This scratched the disc on the ground and can be damaged.
10th – Pumped up with too little air pressure.
Does anyone know what else can go wrong? Conclusion: old tubes and old tires remounted 4 hours loss. Definitiv nein. 3. 10. Mit zu wenig Luftdruck aufgepumpt. Weiss jemand, was man sonst noch falsch machen kann? Konklusion: alte Schläuche und alte Reifen wieder montiert, 4 Stunden Zeitverlust.

We're being followed! / Wir werden verfolgt!
Trabzon, Turkey
Trabzon, Turkey 10.8.2013 Trabzon (TR) Km: 21649 We’re being followed! / Wir werden verfolgt! Been awakened in the night by barking dogs. A dog barked for about half an hour in front of our tents. Later again a ¼ hour until he has dug said aloud his opinion. Gorgeous awakening at the foot of Cave City and wonderful morning ride in the back country of Georgia.
Crossing the border into Turkey is not quite so easy for Dug. Because he is Canadian, he needs a visa, which can be solved at the border. $ 60 for the visa and $ 20 for the insurance are gone quickly but then the journey can be continued.
On Highway a yellow cab with 4 passengers tried to stop in front of us and we don’t knowing why. The out braking was not quite safe driving and Dug shows the middle finger, what I would have done. Then the Turks wanted to stop at the red light but that did not succeed. They threw a water bottle after Dug and followed us on, drove back near very dangerous behind and beside us. A few kilometers later, they build a roadblock to stop us is final. We returned immediately, trying to find the police and waiting a few kilometers distance until they were gone. Then we’ll take a bad feeling on to Trabzon. Unfortunately, not a good impression we are getting from Turkey and have never been. I’ll never have to blindly trust the Turks, as I have to, for example, to the Kazakhs.
In Trabzon I allow myself two rest days because the Consulate of Iran has closed for the weekend. But I get the visa for Iran on Monday in one day! Without LOI, without authentication code, without copy of passport, etc. I need longer to get hose for the front wheel than for the visa!
Tomorrow it goes further inland where I soon must make an important decision. * Instead of the tachometer, I’ll list the mileage driven in future ********************** In der Nacht von bellenden Hunden geweckt worden.

Bad sleeping / Schlecht geschlafen
Tbilisi, Georgia
Tbilisi, Georgia 10.8.2013 Tbilisi (GE) Km: 81786 Bad sleeping / Schlecht geschlafen After 2 days in Baku, it is time to drive on. Cautiously we drive off as much bad about the police in Azerbaijan is being said. But we will never stop.
Before camping Dug digs deep in the mud with the motorbike and pull the motorbike out of the mud was still necessary. I’ll fix my flat tire tomorrow, because I’m tired and hungry. Maybe so, or because of the rain which drops into may tent, I sleep restless. When the rain was over, I repaired the hose, the more rapidly the air lost in the last days and make coffee again, because I’m still not really awake.
Crossing the border to Georgia went extremely quickly and after half an hour we were cleared. The trip to Tbilisi was charmingly and varied in the hills of Georgia. Dug and I have to look tonight, which way we and how long we want to stay here ********************** Nach 2 Tagen in Baku ist es Zeit um weiter zu fahren.

Cultureshock / Kulturschock

Cultureshock / Kulturschock
Baku, Azerbaijan
Baku, Azerbaijan 05.8.2013 Baku (AZ) Km: 81155 Cultureshock / Kulturschock After a crossing time of 27 hours we arrived in Baku and were woken early by 5 o clock rudely by a grumpy cleaning lady. The whole immigration process then took another 8 hours, and I could count 51 stamps for crossing the border from Aktau (KZ) to Baku (AZ) by ferry. New record!
Baku is again different from what I had seen and experienced the past few weeks. An architectural fantastic city and you can see that here is much money. In addition to the long history of the city, it is also charmingly and it’s really clean. After the poor conditions to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan there is a small culture shock. The wealth comes mainly from the oil that is partially funded in the middle of the city.
As Dug a good colleague (Martin) knows, he work in Baku, we were invited by him and can stay with him for 2 nights. Martin shows us the city and we have a good time with him. Thanks again Martin. Danke nochmals Martin.

Caspian Sea / Kaspisches Meer

Caspian Sea / Kaspisches Meer
Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan
Caspian Sea, Kazakhstan 2.8.2013 Caspian Sea (KZ/AZ) Km: 81051 Caspian Sea / Kaspisches Meer To get a ticket for the ferry is more difficult than I thought. Nobody knows when a ferry is ready and as long as no ferry there are no tickets. Ticket Office and Port Office will contact me if I get a place. But I drive a precaution every morning to the port to ask whether there is a ferry and it is because a faster than I thought. So, buy a ticket, pack up and right back to the harbor. I get a lot of papers on the desk and I have to pay an extra fee of 4500 tenge. Then I go to the military check, Fire Department and custom control. Here, unfortunately, give it a problem for me, since I enter Kazakhstan the second time, I did not get a new custom declaration. Thus, a departure is not possible for me. The officer has but just begun their own initiative to call with customs in Beyneu to request the necessary paperwork. After 3 hours, it was so far and I was able to continue. The officer has gone to a lot of effort was not corrupt and very helpful. Super and a prejudice less!
But after the little scare still no one knew when the ferry arrives, and so have Dug and I pitched the tent and stayed in the port area. After waiting a day we stayed again one night in the tent and after another day we were on the ferry and left the harbor at midnight. The comfort of the ship can be described with 4 class well. But we could make coffee and dinner in our cabin with the camp stove itself. So it was quite leisurely and quiet thanks to the lake I was not seasick. Now line up the question of when we will arrive in Baku?

Waiting for the ferry / Warte auf die Fähre
Aktau, Kazakhstan
Aktau, Kazakhstan 30.7.2013 Aktau (UZ) Km: 81051 Waiting for a ferry / Warte auf die Fähre After crossing the border to Kazakhstan, the roads are getting worse. Over 250 kilometers long a road of the worst kind. A hard work and proceed only with less than 30 km / h.
On the way to Aktau I drive through the Caspian depression and wanted to stay overnight under the sea level. But the ground was so clayey that I would get out of the mud after a rain. So I continue to Aktau, looking for a cheap hotel. It’s not easy to find a hotel for 20$. Finally I find one for 30 $.
I immediately went to the port, to get a ticket for the ferry to Baku. There is no timetable and the ferry drives when she drives. This can be tomorrow or in a week or two. My name is now on the waiting list and I have to go to the port every day to ask if there is a ferry today.
Now that I have enough time, so I do oil change on motorbike and have some time to relax.

No Petrol / Kein Benzin

No Petrol / Kein Benzin
Nukus, Uzbekistan
Nukus, Uzbekistan 27.7.2013 Nukus (UZ) Km: 79892 No Petrol / Kein Benzin After some hundred kilometers, I find a gas station that has surprisingly open and sold at a low price of gasoline. The problem is that it is not enough to Kazakhstan and I must again refuel in Nukus.
Arriving in Nukus, I look for a gas station. But it is far and wide no one to find any! But I know that there is gasoline on the black market. A Local helps me and shows me a place a little outside of the city. In front of a house, he stops and talks briefly with the owner. Shortly thereafter, I have 2 pieces 5 liter canister with gasoline in front of me. The negotiation of the price proceeded normally (I dictated the price and he gradually comes closer, until 3000 Com we are at my nominee). I then bought an additional canister and packed on the motorbike so that the gasoline is enough to Kazakhstan.
I need also to buy a lot of water because of the great heat and water demand is increasing enormously. Packed full I drive out of the city and to the way for the next 1000km driving through the desert.

Silk Road / Seidenstrasse

Silk Road / Seidenstrasse
Bukhara, Uzbekistan
Bukhara, Uzbekistan 25.7.2013 Bukhara (UZ) Km: 79233 Silk Road / Seidenstrasse I’ve been driving for some time on the Silk Road, but only now I feel the oriental influence. Bukhara is just like you imagine a city from the Orient. Many Madrassa and Mausoleum, small streets with arches and oriental bazaars. As is traded in lots of little shops and almost everything sold. I find this really great bazaars and pity there is no in Switzerland. The ugly is that there are tourist prices. This means that tourists pay up to 10 times what locals pay.
Another problem is that there is no petrol here. On one hand drive most cars with methane and many gas stations are already closed due to lack of fuel. And so, the prices for a liter of petrol increase dramatically. In Tashkent, I was still paying for a liter 1645 COM (~ 0.64 CHF). On the black market were an incredible price of 4000 COM (~ 1.46 CHF), another for COM 3000 and finally I finding a petrol station where there is a liter for expensive 2650 COM. The black market is still good to change money. One gets the much better price than in the bank or at the border. The conversion rate is about 2cm COM, for $ 50. Ah yes, the largest bill in Uzbekistan is 1000 COM and it takes many bills for $ 50 (see photo). It is now about 1000 Km in front of me where I do not know how bad the roads are and whether there are enough gas stations. Let’s see if I reach the ferry in time in Aktau.

Controls / Kontrollen
Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan 21.7.2013 Tashkent (UZ) Km: 77986 Controls / Kontrollen After the night’s thunderstorm I wake up drenched and I hope that after 42 days without rain this was just an exception.
When approaching the border to Uzbekistan, many people waving on the street. Now I know why, the border is closed at the Jalal-Abad and no passage possible. Now I have to take a detour of 100km and I have to go to Osh. The border crossing went pretty good, but I had 3 other forms sign next to the vehicle registration and the customs declaration. No idea what I had signed. It may well be that I bought 20 camels. In the end, I wanted to leave the border area but the door guard sent me back again and I was checked again. On the way to Tashkent, I was stopped four times more at a roadblock and had to register. Once even when driving in a tunnel inside (all tunnels and bridges here are controlled by military). During an inspection, the policeman took my documents and got into a car and drove away! Another officer told me he goes to the next village to make copies of my documents. Late at night I reach Tashkent, but do not stay overnight in the designated hotel. This I need to still report to the registry office, so that I am properly registered. Keine Ahnung was ich da alles unterschrieben habe.

Good decision / Gute Entscheidung

Good decision / Gute Entscheidung
Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan
Jalal-Abad, Kyrgyzstan 20.7.2013 Jalal-Abad (KG) Km: 77986 Good decision / Gute Entscheidung That I did not take the direct route to Jalal-Abad was the right and a good decision. Days to drive on gravel roads in the back country of Kyrgyzstan, around fascinated scary. Scenic moments as I have never seen before! There is not a single mountain or some hills, it is the hour long ride in a valley without meeting someone. And when you think, now the beautiful passage is over, you go around the corner and a new spectacular valley opens up with a new charm distinctive. And as I said, days long.
As compensation, I got a restless night. First, I had eaten what incompatible, looking at the latrine often than usual. Secondly, beekeepers carry bee boxes at 11pm next to me. Third, middle of the night a violent thunderstorm wake me up and my tent was not strong enough for that. Water streams flowing down between the mattresses and cooking utensils.

Fight my way through / Kämpfe mich durch

Fight my way through / Kämpfe mich durch
Bashkaingdy, Kyrgyzstan
Bashkaingdy, Kyrgyzstan 19.7.2013 Bashkughandy (KG) Km: 77671 Fight my way through / Kämpfe mich durch I’ll go in the morning to the embassy of Uzbekistan and finally get the visa. I then drove straight off. Upon entering the park I have to pay a high price of admission ($ 5) and I will not shake the feeling that there is a different price for locals as for tourists. In other situations, I feel that the Kyrgyz want to pull money out of the pocket tourist.
In the mountains, I realize that something is wrong with the fuel supply. Whenever I travel about 3000 meters I have to switch to reserve even there it still enough gas in the tank. I need to check the vacuum system of petrol pump soon.
The great scenery but compensated for the problems. Also I fall of my motorbike because I tried to go up, a too steep hill (Hill climbing in Kyrgyzstan). But then the fascinating view from the tent of the sunset and the vast plain compensated again.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan 13.7.2013 Bishkek (KG) Km: 77288 Back to Bishkek / Zurück nach Bishkek After the fascinating residence on the Songkol, I’m going to ask the status of the visa back to Bishkek. I allow myself a few days of relaxation in the guesthouse and still have one or the other to organize. So will the Road Traffic Office in Switzerland, that I bring back my license plate.

Songkol / Songkol

Songkol / Songkol
Songkol, Kyrgyzstan
Songkol, Kyrgyzstan 11.7.2013 Songkol (KG) Km: 75838 Songkol / Songkol I bought a replacement tent in Karakol. I took the cheapest tent there (1690 SOM). So the next day I can still camping and I can think how I get a really good tent. Today I have reached a new height record. With 4042 meters above sea level, I crossed an unknown pass. On the way to Songkol I crossed the 3035 meters above sea level located Dolonpass. Road in a bad condition, but still interesting. Great scenery and I made lots of photos at the last 60 Km. Just before the lake I meet two German and I let one ride on my Motorbike for a short distance. Stupid for him at that very moment there was a thunderstorm with hail and snow. Then I ask a farmer if I can next to his yurt camp. Of course, no problem, and I was immediately invited to eat together also. He first served me fermented horse milk (Cumus) and what to eat. I had to take lots of pictures and promise him that I will send this to him. He proudly showed me all his animals and I made a short ride with his horse. In the evening many people came at once into his yurt and have talked and drank. As quickly as they came they were gone. Amazing how the people live there without electricity or flowing water, but extremely nice. I’ve experienced on a clear Night over 3000 meters above sea level, which also correspond was cold (a few degrees below zero).
Before going to sleep, there is a problem with one sheep. It wriggles wildly and has foam at the mouth! The farmer did not wait to cut the sheep’s throat. This makes me a little worried, because rabies can be transmitted quickly. Especially because I ate from another sheep and drunk possibly the milk from it.

Loose my tent / Zelt verloren
Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
Karakol, Kyrgyzstan 9.7.2013 Karakol (KG) Km: 75838 Loose my tent / Zelt verloren Meet interesting people in the hostel in Bishkek. Ellie and Julian go for 5 years by bike around the world! (http://borntohorn.blogspot.com and http://borntohorn.blogspot.com). More from Traveler around the world who are traveling for months or years, gather and I’m traveling with my 2 months of me as a greenhorn. What I am 🙂 In the hostel I hear also about the unrest in the south. It protesting miners and have the road blocked. Now, the border crossing is blocked in the Northeast. Thus my plan change has still something good because I wanted to just pass this border crossing. Drive to the east of Kyrgyzstan and would like to drive around a bit in the mountains. Have this morning probably not packed properly after camping and during refueling, I realize that the missing bag with the tent and sleeping bag! Go back immediately, but cannot find the bag. ****! Still drive to Karakol in a hotel, treat myself to a decent bottle of beer and will later let me think what should I do.

Transfer to Kirgizstan / Transfer nach Kirgistan
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan 6.7.2013 Bishkek (KG) Km: 75838 Transfer to Kirgizstan / Transfer nach Kirgistan After further search for ways I find out now that only the current registration on 14.7. expires. This means that I have a second time to entry the country and reregister for another 30 days, and so the visa issue is resolved. Now I have some time again and I look at the Charyn Canyon. After the procurement of spare parts for motorbike, I drive to Bishkek and want to cross the border to Kirgizstan. The custom control asked me for the Russian registration of the motorbike’s (I find myself at the exit from Kazakhstan). I do not remember if I still have this paper, I have to unpack and search everything. After half an hour I found the paper in the gift bag and after about 2 hours it goes on to Bishkek. But first I have to stop again. I missed a stop sign and have to hear many bad words from the chief police officers. But then further journey and arrival in Bishkek.

Visa problems / Visum Probleme
Almaty, Kazakhstan
Almaty, Kazakhstan 3.7.2013 Almaty (KZ) Km: 75139 Visa problems / Visum Probleme Unfortunately, the immigration officer noticed that I have not registered myself and now I have to pay a fee. And, of course, start again to queue. The immigration officer shows me that my stay here in Kazakhstan on 14.7. ends and I have to leave the country. This is now a bigger problem, because I thought the visa was valid until 10.8. So I have to go immediately to Aktau in order to catch the ferry to Baku. These are 4200km in 5 days which is not possible anyway. The rest of the days I need as a reserve for the ferry. There is just the next problem. The Azerbaijan visa starts at 1.8. and there is a gap of 3 weeks. I try with the travel agent to find a solution. But so far without success, since a new visa for Kazakhstan is only possible when the old visa has expired. At the moment I do not know how I get out of these problems…

Almaty, Kazakhstan 2.7.2013 Almaty (KZ) Km: 75109 Forgot to register / Registrierung vergessen Now, the landscape changes a bit and I have some hills to bypass. But then just before Almaty is to see the high mountain that rises like a wall. More impressive than in Switzerland.
In discussing at the table with the other people from the Hostel, I realize that I forgot to register. I should have registered within 5 days, but what I have not done for 3 weeks. What will happen if I go by the registration office tomorrow?

Gulshad, Kazakhstan
Gulshad, Kazakhstan 1.7.2013 Gulshad (KZ) Km: 74510 Caught on free camping / Beim wilden Campen erwischt I’ve camped several times outdoors. Until now, every time without any problems. Well I have been now two times “caught” by the Rangers. Both times several people came to me and I always have jitters that I can pack up everything and have to move on. But again is not the case. The rangers are very curious and when they see me they just to me by car. But is not a problem to stay on his property with the tent. Mostly we discussed about the motorbike and not that it is forbidden to camp here. Yesterday morning I was awakened by two wild dogs and a small group of horses. Today there were a lot of gophers.
And it goes on, on the Infinite Road …

Contrasts / Kontraste
Astana, Kazakhstan
Astana, Kazakhstan 29.6.2013 Astana (KZ) Km: 73813 Contrasts / Kontraste In early afternoon I reach Astana and I’m a little bit shocked. After 2 Weeks in the outback of Kazakhstan and one week free camping, I reach now a complete different world. There are monumental buildings, clean roads, a lot of life style and many shopping malls. But have trouble finding the hostel, because here in Astana, they have changed the street names. The road I seek is now in a completely different neighborhood. But I accustom that is reversed in the shower hot and cold. To the colors you cannot see well, as they also do not agree. The logic for this I have not figured out to this day. And finally: have a door handle found, which closes down and opens upward. Unfortunately there is no embassy of Uzbekistan in Astana (it’s in Almaty). And I get only the most important spare part for the motorbike, and so I’ll go to Almaty earlier. Do I get the visa for Uzbekistan and do I find the spare parts?

Kyzylzhar, Kazakhstan
Kyzylzhar, Kazakhstan 25.6.2013 Kyzylzhar(KZ) Km: 73490 Do I reach Astana / Erreiche ich Astana? I’m lucky, because I had no more flat tire or other problems and so the water holds until the next city. The first I do is to look for a shop to buy some water. As many times before after a short moment many people are around my bike and want to make photos. And also as before they bring some presents for me. One girl who doesn’t made a photo or talks with me, give me a bottle of cola. Just so! Another man invited me for lunch. It’s amazing how nice, friendly and helpful the people in Kazakhstan are. It’s completely different than we are in Switzerland think about Kazakhstan. It’s now too late. Also because I made a detour (want take a shortcut). But I’m happy to stay one more night in the nature and enjoy the quiet and great atmosphere. Astana will have to wait. Einfach so! Astana muss also noch warten.

Too less water / Zu wenig Wasser

Too less water / Zu wenig Wasser
Zhiezkazghan, Kazakhstan
Zhiezkazghan, Kazakhstan 23.6.2013 Zhiezkazghan (KZ) Km: 72940 Too less water / Zu wenig Wasser Immediately after I started I noticed that the steering is very funny. I still think it’s something because of the redistribution of the weight (more weight in the large middle pocket). But then: flat tire again. I change the inner tube straight and do not fix it because I have only a patchwork pavement left. It happened in the morning and it’s not as hot (~ 32 degrees at 9:00) but already stressful and I need another bottle of water. I know now that the water is running out, because on the track of Kyzylada to Zhiezkazhan there are 426 kilometers without a village shop or petrol station.
The temperature also rises a few degrees every hour, until the thermometer shows about 40 degrees. Additional a 160 km long and dry dusty gravel road is waiting for me. I can only hope there are no problems with the bike or so. Otherwise I don’t know how I’ll read the next city.

Baikonur, Kazakhstan 21.6.2013 Baikonur (KZ) Km: 72185 Remember to Yuri Gagarin / In Gedenken an Juri Gagarin Of course, I cannot continue my trip without making a stop in Baikonur. I would like to have seen the cosmodrome, but I thought already, it’s not possible to pass the control station. What surprised me, also the city is sealed off and not possible to in a hotel in Baikonur. Only Russian sign on the car and at the gas station you have to pay with Rubel. It’s a Russian town in Kazakhstan.
The Baikonur Cosmodrome is the place where Yuri Gagarin was launched on 12 April 1961, top of a Wostok rocket, to his record flight. He was the first person who was in space. A real adventure, especially when you know that you are sitting on a barrel of gunpowder and return to earth like a cannon ball. Bravo Yuri. Bravo Juri.

Aral, Kazakhstan 20.6.2013 Aral (KZ) Km: 71879 Need a break / Brauche eine Pause For breakfast again bumpy and off road. But then, the road M36 like as I’m on the golf course. Need now, after 3 days and 1000 km and bumpy off-road, a break. Human and material show signs of wear. For this, the petrol is cheap: CHF 95er 0.70/Liter costs.
Overnight in Aral. The city on the same lake, caused by the people has become the world’s biggest environmental disaster. Dehydration, salinity and pollution are the main causes for a more significant catastrophe like Chernobyl!
Recommendation: Read also the article “Aral Sea” at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aral_Sea Depressed and thought I will leave this place tomorrow. Übernachtung in Aral.

Shalkar, Kazakhstan
Shalkar, Kazakhstan 17.6.2013 Shalk’ar (KZ) Km: 71576 Off road / Offroad Today same like yesterday. All day long drive mostly over gravel roads. I’d tried to take a road to Aral, because I want record this to insert it onto OSM. A man shows me the way. Than a huge wear ride began. Many big stones on the road and for a while driving in a dessert. But then I was not able to drive more into the dessert and I make a turn. Finally I had a flat tire and the tube has a slot of 10 cm. First I took the tube for the front wheel and then a young boy want to help me and before I realized it he made again a hole into the tube. I was really got mad. The aluminum case is also already bent and I cannot cook anymore. Stay overnight somewhere in the steppe.

Mughodzhary, Kazakhstan 16.6.2013 Mughodzhary (KZ) Km: 71297 Freedom / Freiheit I’m happy the stress with making Photos is over and I can driver over the dry and skinny land of Kazakhstan. But first the police stopped me again, to makes Photos with me! Driving long time over gravel roads, without see somebody. But I enjoy the fantastic view to the barren and flat land. Stay overnight on small hill with a great view to the steppe and the sunset.
