Francesca goes home!/ Francesca geht nach Hause

Francesca goes home!/ Francesca geht nach Hause
Cancun, Mexico
Cancun, Mexico 2.4.2016 Cancun, MEX Km: 110636 Francesca goes home!/ Francesca geht nach Hause For some time we do not know how the journey will continue. But we know that Francesca goes home!
Francesca has long time been the desire expressed to go home to see her family and friends. Of course, she can do this at any time, and now it is the right time for this. Meanwhile, she is already more than 2 ½ years on the road and she like to show Leonardo to her mother.
This means packing up and prepares everything to go to the airport. Then we say goodbye to each other and I wonder how long I will no longer see the little Leonardo….

Again solid ground under the feet / Wieder festen.

Again solid ground under the feet / Wieder festen.
Cancun, Mexico
Cancun, Mexico 28.3.2016 Cancun, MEX Km: 110521 Again solid ground under the feet / Wieder festen Boden unter den Füssen Shortly after we leave the port, the sails are tensioned and it starts to rock. And I’ll be right back seasick and I retire to the cabin. This time rocking the boat is bigger and I get stomach cramps, headache, and it is convenient for me. Francesca feels also not good, but must persevere and look after Leonardo. We both cannot enjoy the journey and I spend 3 days below deck in the cabin. I can also not eat because I had to trough out it again immediately.
After 3 days, we can see the coast of Mexico and I’m really glad that the rocking is finish. We still need to spend another night on the ship, because the immigration is already closed. The next day I build the sidecar back on the motorbike and we can continue on solid ground. Not quite, because we still have to take a ferry to the mainland. We can stay in our host Ricardo again and I still have a few days effort, because I have to get used to the solid ground. Especially when I have to go to the bathroom at night, it still rocks.
Now we are at the same place as a month ago, and again do not know how the journey continues….

Adios Cuba / Adios Kuba

Adios Cuba / Adios Kuba
Cienfuegos, Cuba
Cienfuegos, Cuba 24.3.2016 Cienfuegos, C Km: 110287 Adios Cuba / Adios Kuba For us, it’s time to travel further and to leave Cuba again. To do this we go to Cienfuegos, but first make a detour to Santa Clara and Trinidad. Trinidad is again a place that is so overrun with tourists. A local shows us a local restaurant where the food just 3 $ Costs. Probably still twice as much as locals pay, but much less than in the, tourist restaurants’.
Francesca tries to find a hotel but it’s hard to find one. So we go right to Cienfuegos. On the black market I find cheap cigars. To buy them, we are led into a dark backyard and the seller shows us different cigars. I buy some but I do not know if they are stolen and forged.
Then I have to load the bike again onto the ship and soon we leave Cuba. I hope I’m not seasick again as on the outward journey. Let’s see… Mal sehen…

Adios Ursi / Adios Ursi
Boca de Camarioca, Cuba
Boca de Camarioca, Cuba 21.3.2016 Boca de Camarioca, C Km: 110287 Adios Ursi / Adios Ursi Time passes quickly and Ursi already going back home. We usually travel very slowly and have plenty of time. So it seems to us funny that she already goes home. Even if it is only 2 weeks, it is great that she visited us. We still make the one and other trip, going to the beach and say goodbye Ursi. She takes a taxi to Havana and this gives us the opportunity to travel a bit further.

Bay of Pigs / Schweinebucht

Bay of Pigs / Schweinebucht
Playa Larga, Caribbean
Playa Larga, Caribbean 17.3.2016 Playa Larga, C Km: 109748 Bay of Pigs / Schweinebucht Next, we drive to the Bay of Pigs. It is the place where the Cuban exiles launched the invasion to fall the Castro regime. We find a nice place to stay and try to buy what to eat. We drive around the whole village and cannot find any shop who sells vegetables or fruits. We drive about 5 km inland until we find a seller with cucumbers and tomatoes. Even a pineapple we buy from him and ride back. As I see someone on the bike with fresh salad. I stop and speak to him and buy the salad from him. Later, I’m still looking for a bakery, at the first the equipment does not work and it is closed. The 2nd has all the bread sold and Francesca can buy only in a cafe a little bread. The situation with food is a bit unusual here in Cuba and this I never expected. Let’s see how it goes and if we do not starve….

Waste of time / Zeitverschwendung

Waste of time / Zeitverschwendung
Vinales, Cuba
Vinales, Cuba 16.3.2016 Vinales, C Km: 109376 Waste of time / Zeitverschwendung We do next a trip to Vinales because it should be there especially beautiful. Unfortunately, it is waste of time and I wonder once again how this place became a tourist attraction. We still make a trip to a cigar factory and a local tried to sell us cigars on the street. We negotiate a bit and I decide to buy later. I think there where 2 possibilities. Either they are stolen or not genuine. Let’s see if I will get them even cheaper.

Visitor from home / Besuch von Zuhause

Visitor from home / Besuch von Zuhause
Havana, Cuba
Havana, Cuba 12.3.2016 Havana, C Km: 109065 Visitor from home / Besuch von Zuhause We go to the capital to Havana and looking for a hotel. We end up in the unrenovated part of Old Havana. First we notice the great atmosphere on the streets. Instead of cars are people on the streets and there is a happy mood. Many people come and look at the bike and trying to talk with me. Unfortunately not so simple with my Spanish skills, but nevertheless awesome to communicate with these peoples.
A day later, we meet my sister Ursi who just arrived and will be together with us for 2 weeks. She brings me also urgent needed spare parts, because I still have the temporary fix of the clutch.
The next day we stroll through the city and quickly realize that there is no supermarket. And the small shops have only a very limited range. Socialism Live! Sozialismus Live!

Importing the bike / Töff importieren

Importing the bike / Töff importieren
Cienfuegos, Cuba
Cienfuegos, Cuba 8.3.2016 Cienfuegos, C Km: 108684 Importing the bike / Töff importieren Since we are now in Cuba, it would be great to ride with the bike around. Fortunately, we have this loaded on the ship. Now I have to get it only through customs. This is basically simple. They check the engine number and do some paperwork. The copies are made each with carbon paper. Then it goes to the traffic police to do an inspection. Just behind the house is the inspection place, and the people are super nice. These then give me a license plate from Cuba, because it is not allowed to drive with the Swiss number around. Then wait again and at 19:00 I get even the Cuban car registration and from now on I can ride in Cuba. Because it’s late we went again on the ship. And tomorrow we will continue…

Welcome to Cuba / Welcome to Cuba

Welcome to Cuba / Welcome to Cuba
Cienfuegos, Cuba
Cienfuegos, Cuba 6.3.2016 Cienfuegos, C Km: 108684 Welcome to Cuba / Welcome to Cuba I feel a little better every day, so that I can make on the 3rd day a ‘watching’ on the deck. This means 3 hours lookout for ships crossing on our way. But I have not seen anything except some icebergs.
Then we arrive in Cuba! We have to wait for the Immigration and then I can do a first walk in Cuba. After that we change money and buy some food.
First, I notice that the people are very relaxed and friendly. Because of the embargo lacks in Cuba much. In addition, there is a socialist state but the people seem to be happy and satisfied. Let’s see if I can make more such observations. *Sorry for the delay of this entry.

Seasick / Seekrank

Seasick / Seekrank
Cancun, Mexico
Cancun, Mexico 4.3.2016 Somewhere, MEX Km: 108682 Seasick / Seekrank We want even to try something new, and take a trip to the sea. Here on the Caribbean side of Mexico the sea is fantastic, we have some variety and meet other people. We continue with an old sailing vessel from Isla Mujeres to the open sea and spend a few days there.
Shortly after leaving the port, the waves are bigger and I’m quickly seasick. As I look at Francesca I realize that it is not doing well. I must soon go to the toilet and have to worm out. A bit later Francesca is also ready to worm out. Leonardo has for a few days again some fever because the 4th tooth is coming. We all are around only in the cabin and do not feel well. The problem now is that we are too far away from the mainland already and will thus be even longer seasick …

How to continue? / Wie weiter?

How to continue? / Wie weiter?
Cancun, Mexico
Cancun, Mexico 2.3.2016 Cancun, MEX Km: 108624 How to continue? / Wie weiter? We leave Valladolid the place where Christopher Columbus died. After I started my journey in Genoa (the birthplace of Christopher Columbus) now the question arises how the journey to continue.
We drive to Cancun and I must first check the motorcycle, because it sounds strange since a while. Unfortunately, I find nothing and the noise is still there. I am bit lost and don’t know what I can do. The motorbike has now 170,000 km on the clock and I wonder how long it will last?
Well, anyway we have to decide how it will go on …………………………. …………….

Disney Land / Disney Land

Disney Land / Disney Land
Valladolid, Mexico
Valladolid, Mexico 26.2.2016 Valladolid, MEX Km: 108267 Disney Land / Disney Land Shortly after Corozal we reach the border and we in a new country. The new is an old: Mexico. We’re going to Valledolid and next day we go the famous ruins of Chichen Itza View. When we arrive at the parking, we turn right again! There are definitely too many people here. I count around 35 buses in the parking and a lot of cars. We have no desire to watch the ruins and feel like in an anthill. So we left Chichen Itza and search a nearby Cenote. Unfortunately, this was a waste of money, because here hundreds of people in the small sinkhole. In addition, the hole is not particularly beautiful and with a lot of concrete on the walls. We blaspheme about tourism here and that it’s like in Disneyland. But how we like to continue we don’t know…

Nothing to do / Nichts zu machen

Nothing to do / Nichts zu machen
Corozal, Belize
Corozal, Belize 22.2.2016 Corozl, BH Km: 107847 Nothing to do / Nichts zu machen We reach Corozal but know not what we want to do here. There is nothing to be seen, and the city is not really beautiful. So we hang around most of the time and do nothing. Belize does not have much to offer in addition to the beaches and diving and is also expensive. But not many peoples lives in this country, what means there is almost no traffic on the road and very pleasant to drive on almost empty streets.
At night I cannot sleep, because some have a party next to us. In general I sleep often not so well and I’m constantly tired.
In between, I have to fix my laptop. This time the power supply is broken. Luckily I find a computer store who sells me a power supply from another laptop. I just need to solder connector to the wire and then it works again. It is probably time for a new laptop J ********************** Wir erreichen Corozal und wissen aber nicht was wir hier machen wollen.

Alton Ha, Belize 20.2.2016 Alton Ha, BH Km: 107713 Maya ruins / Maya Ruinen We don’t know exactly where we want to go, we are heading north. We want to look in every country something and so we go to Alton Ha. Since we arrive late we search for an accommodation and the next day we visit the ruins. These ruins are quite nice but a little too expensive. Unfortunately, everything is expensive in Belize and you can feel that people want my money. Otherwise people are nice, friendly and talk to us often. Even on the road, most waving. Whether it is because of the sidecar or blond baby with blue eyes? We do not know it….

Beach holidays and other travelers / Strandurlaub

Beach holidays and other travelers / Strandurlaub
Hopkins, Belize
Hopkins, Belize 17.2.2016 Hopkins, BH Km: 107412 Beach holidays and other travelers / Strandurlaub und andere Begenungen Francesca wants to go to the beach and so we go to the coast. Unfortunately, just today is a rainy day and I have to drive over an hour in full rain. Unfortunately my rain cover is not waterproof (Touratech is not worth the money, sorry), so I get soaked. Francesca is naturally well protected in the sidecar. In Hopkins we find a hotel that just fit in our budget. But we soon realize that Belize is a lot more expensive than Mexico and Guatemala.
As we once again have internet for over a week, we spend the time to dry the equipment and some time on the computer and for sure to relax. The next day we do a trip to Placencia and see that especially older tourists are here and because of this we do not feel so well. We extend one more day and go to Dangriga because it should be beautiful there. But we find not out why. We meet 2 other couples who are on a world tour too. This is great to chat with them and we feel like in a big world traveler family. Then we go back to Hopkins to make plans as we go further ….

New country, no. 39 / Neues Land, Nummer 39

New country, no. 39 / Neues Land, Nummer 39
Somewhere in the jungle, Belize
Somewhere in the jungle, Belize 13.2.2016 Jungle, BH Km: 107075 New country, no. 39 / Neues Land, Nummer 39 We wake up and have breakfast. Then I want connect to the internet and the owner says as yesterday that is not possible today because of the weather…. This makes me angry because I feel fooled. Then I pack up and we head west until we come to a new country. Before we get to customs, a woman wants money again (drive thru permit). Next to me all the cars don’t pay and I tell her that I will not pay too, as long as all the others don’t pay. Of course, I am speaking in such situations only Swiss German and do not understand English or Spanish 🙂 The departure from Guatemala is easy and we still eat something small and change the last Quetzal. Then move to Belize: First quarantine inspection and spray something on the motorbike and I have to pay of course. Then, Immigration and Registration of motorbikes (temporary import) without any problems. Then the nice woman will still check the motorbike. She asks if we have vegetables, fruits, etc. with us. Of course not, I say. She looks what is under the plastic and then waves us through. After that I have to pay the Road Permit and should then buy insurance. After the first city we feel the Caribbean style and that people from all over the world are here. A bit later I have to stop at a police control. But the woman (or man is not as accurate recognizable) wanted to see the driver’s license only. Then continue driving to a camping spot right in the Jungle. A nice couple from the United States maintains this and they are about the same as we alternatively. After cooking a soup and computer work and we got to sleep.

Tikal National Park, Guatemala
Tikal National Park, Guatemala 12.2.2016 Tikal, GCA Km: 106962 Yet Tikal / Doch noch Tikal Leonardo gets increasingly fever and we are a little worried. I have tried to avoid high risk region with dangerous Viruses, but this is no guarantee that we catch one. The next day he sleeps most of the time and has absolutely no energy. In the evening the fever goes away, but come back the next morning. Then Francesca discovered a new tooth. I expected the next one always down and never checked at the top. In the afternoon he has then a little more energy and he smiles again.
Now we decide nevertheless to go to Tikal. If we do not go, we have hardly seen anything of Guatemala and I have an extra made a budget for admissions, so we can pay well. Unfortunately, just today is not so nice weather, but before Leonardo was sick so we could not go. With Tikal we see our first Mayan ruins. Let’s see if we are still further view.

Not visiting Tikal / Kein Tikal

Not visiting Tikal / Kein Tikal
El Remate, Guatemala
El Remate, Guatemala 9.2.2016 Le Remate, GCA Km: 106891 Not visiting Tikal / Kein Tikal We leave the Highlands and have reached the southernmost point and go back to the north. Because we leave the mountains it becomes significantly warmer but on this side of the mountains still a little rainy season, but will be finished soon. We go to Flores and look for a room. The prices for accommodation are quite high here and we are looking for the cheapest hotel. It is next to the main road but the noise is kept within limits. At night, we notice that it is still very noisy. Because of the noise I do not sleep well. The next day we go to Tikal, respectively only up to the ticket corner. $ 20 entrance fee is a bit much and too much for us. We decide to not visit Tikal. It is not the first boycott I make because of too high prices. We go to the next village and go to a hotel that was recommended to us. We decide to stay here, because it is much quieter, beautiful and cheaper. But this means I have to drive 25 km back to Flores to pick up the entire luggage. Francesca meanwhile remains in Le Remate because Leonardo does not feel so well. In the old hotel look a bit weird, as we have said in the morning, we stay one more night. But in such situations, I can just speak Swiss German J
I’m going back and we enjoy the quiet, but worries us that Leonardo do not feel good and get some fever …

Horrible Road / Horrible Road

Horrible Road / Horrible Road
San Cristobal Verapaz, Guatemala
San Cristobal Verapaz, Guatemala 6.2.2016 San Cristobal Verapaz, GCA Km: 106458 Horrible Road / Horrible Road We drive on and soon I feel that the clutch slips. I make a brief check and decide to move on. It seems that the clutch is ok but from 4000 rpm ridiculous vibrations and noise appears. So I drive only slowly. Unfortunately, the weather is getting worse and soon it begins to rain. We decide to stop and stay at the next hotel. As is so comes naturally no longer a hotel and we have to drive over a pass. The road is getting worse and steeper. But I will not ride too slowly and because then I need the clutch. So I drive in first gear, but a bit faster. Since the road, meanwhile, has deep potholes and it shakes Francesca in the sidecar around violently. It is amazing that Leonardo is still asleep and it seems he likes the bumpy road. Unfortunately, the rain becomes stronger and the mud deeper. Through the rain, most potholes are filled with water and you cannot see how deep they are. Since there are so many, I cannot many times avoid them and it shakes the whole motorbike with sidecar through. The ride takes over an hour until we finally have solid ground under their feet. Meanwhile, it is already dusk, I’m wet and it’s cold. I will only go to a hotel and sleep …

The major repair / Die grosse Reparatur

The major repair / Die grosse Reparatur
Huehuetenango, Guatemala
Huehuetenango, Guatemala 4.2.2016 Huehuetenango, GCA Km: 106273 The major repair / Die grosse Reparatur The mechanic and all the other people are no help and all say ‘no’ when I ask for some help. For me there is only one solution: to be creative and improvise and construct something.
Should I modify the cam or add an additional disc to reduce the distance. If I modify the cam I need to later buy a new one. So I opt for the disk, looking for a metalworker. I find one and he cuts with the Flex a disc out of a sheet of metal. The slots I file itself and buy for his a new file. But this does not last long and is not worth the money. But, whatever? When I’m done, go back and mount the new disc. Well, it should work, but I have to do a test drive to see this. Since I have removed the sidecar I have never ride the bike solo and I have some fear for the test drive. I hope that I do not lose the balance….
The test drive succeeds and shows that it works in principle, but the question is how long? The new disk is not made by hardened steel, and it will be worn out fast. How long we can continue with the repaired clutch? Well, we will see….
After 2 days of hard work I need a rest day and then we try to move on. Aber was soll‘s?

Broken clutch / Kupplung defekt

Broken clutch / Kupplung defekt
Huehuetenango, Guatemala
Huehuetenango, Guatemala 3.2.2016 Huehuetenango, GCA Km: 106273 Broken clutch / Kupplung defekt We will definitely go to the next town and looking for a hotel. The next morning, I pack and we want to try that Leonardo goes in the sidecar and Francesca on the motorbike. Then I have to go up only one really steep road, but unfortunately I cannot drive in first gear because the motorbike has too little power. I must therefore let the clutch slip, until … until it no longer works. Unfortunately, there is no heat problem, but is burned through. The Security calls to a mate and he pull us by truck up the hill and then to a mechanic. I start immediately with the dismantling and Fra is looking for a hotel, because I worry that we stay here for a longer time. After dismantling, I note that the clutch is completely gone and I have no spares and have to improvise. The mechanic and all others waving that they have no solution. Furthermore, I’m a bit disappointed, because they are usually very creative in such countries.
Another possibility is, it sent the spare parts from Europe. But this takes minimum 1-2 weeks and costs around $ 500 Express shipping. Normal mailing lasts up to 5 weeks and I have already a date for the onward journey, I cannot move. Yes, this time I’m really in the ****!

Problems at border crossings / Probleme bei Grenze
Huehuetenango, Guatemala
Huehuetenango, Guatemala 2.2.2016 Huehuetenango, GCA Km: 106267 Problems at border crossings / Probleme beim Grenzübertritt Unfortunately, we see Thomas on departure no more because his son had an accident during motocross and had to go to hospital. We thank you very much for all the help and that you are part of our trip.
On the road to the border, there have been many attacks and so we want to drive this way in one piece. So we stay overnight close to the border on a small lake. Then we want to leave Mexico and the man from the customs begins to play around with us and will stamp the visa. We were told that this is not necessary. The consequence is that I have to unsubscribe the motorbike and I need to register anything again when we again intend to enter Mexico and then we have to pay again. In the end he even says that we have to pay extra for Leonardo although this may not be necessary. He plays easily from his power, and we must pay the ‘Gringo Fee’. This is annoying, because we are trying to save money where we can and then $ 100 are quickly gone.
Upon arrival in Guatemala then first we have to do a biosecurity, which means paying a little and then they inject something to the motorbike to disinfect. Thereafter, the Immigration wants 30 Quetzal for stamp the passports. I tell him he should give me a receipt for it. He says no, and I tell him again I want a receipt. Then he gives me the money back! So it works with corrupt officials. At the Custom’s then I get some problems with the sidecar. They cannot find this category in the system and in the vehicle license it is registered as a motorcycle. There are more and more people and try to solve the problem. Several times we have to negotiate and say that I bought the sidecar original with the motorcycle. After an hour they let us pass then, and again we have a country more. Guatemala, country number 38th.
Now we just need to safely get to the next town and hope that they do not attack us.

After one week we make the first trip and visit the center of San Cristobal and some villages in the area. Some places like the center of San Cristobal are very touristy and you feel in another world. I like it where we sleep, because the life of the local population is authentic. I did already noticed a few times that we mind more and more tourist hot spots and we feel comfortable where it has few or no tourists.
Because of the sickness we lost some time and I’m worried that we get into a time problem. So we have to go back to road soon …

I lie in bed for a few days and fortunately help us Thomas and call with a doctor and organize antibiotics. The drugs help that the fever goes down quickly and I feel a little bit better. But I need a few days until I have some energy. Every second day I feel better and Francesca worse. But she can do without any medication. We are still thinking what we have where captured what is not easy to find out because there are almost an infinite number of possibilities. Let’s see if we can recover, or whether we have captured a nasty virus.

San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico 20.1.2016 San Cristobal, MEX Km: 105916 Indigenous peoples / Indigene Völker Because I still do not feel good, we drive today not as much and stay at a hotel. The next day, we are doing a little better and we go to San Cristobal. On the way we stop and help a local who has almost chopped off one finger with his machete. We doctoring him and he invites us to his home. But we want to continue and in San Cristobal wait Thomas, a Swiss who lives a very long time in Mexico and it seems that he speaks 12 languages perfectly. With Francesca he speaks in Italian and with me in Swiss German what’s great for both. We can stay a few days with him, which is also fantastic.
In San Cristobal many indigenous people live and dress traditional dresses. So for example the babies are wrapped with a simple cloth behind their backs, and most are carried on the head.
Unfortunately we feel still not very good and we are considering what we’ve eaten where or if we otherwise got a virus. Time we see things go on….

Concepción Bamba, Mexico 15.1.2016 Concepcion Bamba, MEX Km: 105451 All sick / Alle Krank Before we continue, I like to change the tire and realize with horror that the wheel bearing is completely broken. It even lacks quite a few balls. Thus it is also clear from where the strange noises come. Luckily I have spare bearings with me and can replace the faulty bearings quickly. But I’m worried about why the bearing was used so quickly, maybe because of the sidecar and I soon need a new one?
Then Leonardo is sick and must puke 2 times. It does not take long before Francesca and I are also sick. I still feel fit enough to pitch the tent and so we go to a beach to stay overnight. Too bad we cannot really enjoy the moment, because we do not feel well. How long we will probably still be sick….

We make with our neighbor Paco a trip to Mazunte to the southernmost point on this side of Mexico. But for me it has once again too many tourists and all waiting on a sunset, which does not come, because it is cloudy.
Otherwise we do not make much. Some snorkeling, swimming, making sugared almonds and other small things. There is also a little dull and we want to continue soon.

Puerto Escondido, Mexico 7.1.2016 Puerto Escondido, MEX Km: 104973 Reunion / Wiedersehen Actually we wanted to stay longer in Puerto Escondido, but we like it in Zipolite. So we make a day trip to Puerto Escondido. When we go to beach, we just meet Dug again. Wow, what a surprise. We still go swimming and then we enjoy spending time with Dug and Cheryl.
The good thing is that I still have a lot of material that I no longer need, and can give to Dug. Because I still try to reduce the total weight, as this is not optimal as my travel. I am also always Dug’s opinion, as smaller the motorbike and the little the luggage as better. Further I suggest for a RTW to use a bike with not more than 250cc We leave Dug and Cheryl too late and arrive in the dark. Basically, is prevent to drive at night and today should be an exception.

We therefore are looking for something new and Francesca finds a good place, which is also more favorable. In a hotel under a roof we can pitch the tent. It is also an attempt, whether Leonardo sleeps better when he always wakes up in the same environment.
Then we go to Pochutla on the local market. We buy as always far too much and drive back to the delicious things to eat.
In the remaining time we do not have much. We enjoy it but to have some time for rest.

Zipolite, Mexico 31.12.2015 Zipolite, MEX Km: 104696 Pan-American Highway / Pan-American Highway We leave today and Ruben Aurora and thank you for the warm hospitality. We hope to see you somewhere again.
It goes on and this time on the magnificent Carretera Panamericana. I imagine a big, road in a good condition. But soon we get into the mountains and there is a lot of work with the sidecar up to almost 3000 meters above sea level. Since we cannot go all the way to the Pacific, we stop in San Jose del Pacifico. A small village who is more than 2500 Meter above sea level. We meet by chance the neighbors of Ruben and Aurora. Wow what a surprise. The next day, we ride down from 2800 meter to sea level and temperatures are much warmer. The distance to the sea is just out of corners and this for 150 kilometers! We are looking for a camping in Zipolite, and will also find one. But we are not happy with the owner and we want to look for another place tomorrow. In addition, his young son makes a lot of noise with fireworks. Even otherwise, many fireworks will be lit as if today some special day. Let’s see how the world looks tomorrow.

Oaxaca, Mexico 28.12.2015 Oaxaca, MEX Km: 104384 Vacinations / Impfungen I forgot that it’s time to repeat the basic immunization of Leonardo. Ruben also helps us this time and organizes everything. So we can just go to the Health Center and after waiting a bit Leonardo gets his vaccinations. Surprisingly the vaccination is free and so simple to do. In the US, it was a great effort and it cost a lot. It is also interesting that in Mexico other basic vaccinations are recommended. Even the United States and Australia were different. However, we maintain our self-defined vaccination plan and vaccinate only the most necessary.
After the last vaccination Leonardo was a little nervous and so we decide to wait one more day before we will travel.

Oaxaca, Mexico 22.12.2015 Oaxaca, MEX Km: 104240 2 times blood donations / 2 Mal Blutspenden I can persuade Francesca finally, that the little sleep alone and not on Francesca. Lo and behold, he and she sleep better and longer. He needs again in the night to feed something and then he get up around 5 o clock and make a coffee. Our host Ruben owns a blood bank, and I’m glad to do something for him. So I go after a long time again to donate blood. Actually, I’ll go right twice and also Leonardo donates plenty of blood, as we have a few mosquitoes in the room at night. I then hunt them and catch some. From there is peace and we all can sleep comfortably again. Meanwhile, we have seen enough churches and we go to see the ruins of Mitla, but they are somewhat disappointing. Let’s see if we can find something better …. A lot of kilometers / Viele Kilometer
Oaxaca, Mexico
Oaxaca, Mexico 19.12.2015 Oaxaca, MEX Km: 104030 A lot of kilometers / Viele Kilometer We still have to drive many kilometers to the south and we have 3 more days of riding. After 800 kilometers we reach Oaxaca. Especially the last day was exhausting, because we are usually driven into the mountains and is with the sidecar much tiring than solo. This is mainly because the balance is not right for the most time (more on that later). I feel like I made a full day sports and need to rest for a day.
Per day we drive usually between 150 and 200 kilometers. More is due Leonardo impossible, or we do not expect him. Thus, the shaking and the noise are not too much, we ride about 60 Km / h. These are then per day about 3 hours driving time. Furthermore, the tire is still usable, and not necessary to change it. Once again we have luck and can stay at Ruben, who is also a member of the Motorrad Federation Mexico. We get a private room with bathroom and can use the whole house. Wow. Leonardo is not sleeping so well lately and Francesca has to get up again in the night. This we need to discuss necessarily. Actually, I know the problem for some time, but Francesca will not understand it. Let’s see how this ends ….

No accomondation / Keine Unterkunft

No accomondation / Keine Unterkunft
Izúcar de Matamoros, Mexico
Izúcar de Matamoros, Mexico 16.12.2015 Izucar de Matamoros, MEX Km: 103671 No accomondation / Keine Unterkunft It’s not so easy to find an accommodation for us. We often have to search a long time and fight for the price. Once we negotiate a good price and when we are in the room and want to pay, it costs 100 pesos more. So do not discuss and look for another hotel.
We opt more and more for Auto-Hotels. The hotel is that you can book for single hours and are mainly used for the sex industry. For us, this hotel is great though, because it is cheap, has larger rooms and you usually get a separate, closed garage. So I can easily park the bike and leave the luggage on the motorbike.

On the way south we drive over a 3150 meters above the sea lying pass and there is quite cold. Even otherwise, it is not so warm, because we are on a plateau, which is about 2,500 meters above sea level. Amazingly, the rear tires will last longer than I thought. Since it takes the police in Mexico is not as accurate, I drive it down completely. Let’s see how many kilometers I can make…

The third invitation / Die dritte Einladung

The third invitation / Die dritte Einladung
Morelia, Mexico
Morelia, Mexico 13.12.2015 Morelia, MEX Km: 103198 The third invitation / Die dritte Einladung We ride about 50 kilometers and have again an invitation. This time in Morelia and we can live in the apartment of Octavio. We are escorted by Lalo and Octavio into downtown. We look briefly at the Big Church and have a nice coffee.
Octavio shows us the next days the city center, the specialties and a Candy Museum. It is a really cozy and great afternoon.
In the evening we are a bit inattentive and unfortunately Leonardo falls out of the bed on the hard floor. He begins, of course, immediately screaming, what is in my opinion a good sign, because as long as he can scream, nothing worse happened. He calmed down quickly when Francesca taking him into her arms.
Too soon, we need to leave Octavio and Anita, as we want to spend Christmas with friends on a beach. At the End Octavio and Anna surprise us with many gifts. For example, a new dress for Leonardo and a sandwich on the way. Wow! Thanks Octavio and Anna for all the gifts and the great time and that you are part of our travel.

Quiroga, Mexico
Quiroga, Mexico 11.12.2015 Quiroga, MEX Km: 103142 Again an invitation / Erneut eine Einladung
Even in Guadalajara I picked up the ordered gear. This has been specially produced for me in the Honda factory in Guadalajara. It is interesting what is written on the packaging: ,Made in Japan’ J Anyway I now have an original Honda sproket. On the road to Quiroga it rains. This is already the second time since we’ve been in Mexico. But it’s not so bad and Francesca warps in the sidecar while I can ride in the rain and in the cold…. We arrive in Quiroga and have a next invitation. We can stay in the apartment above the workshop of Beto. Beto shows us Patzguaro which is built in the older Spanish style and we visit an old monastery. He also shows us the delicious local specialties that we get served at dinner with Octavio.
All the time we’ve never too less food, because Beto every day fills the fridge and gives us more goodies. Beto and Octavio give us a great gift: additional lamps for the motorbike. Beto mounted an extra relay so that the lights are controlled via the ignition. Wow, these lights are much brighter than the ones that I have. Thanks Beto for everything you’ve given us and that you’re part of our trip.

Say goodbye to Ernesto and Andrea / Bye, bye
Zamora de Hidalgo, Mexico
Zamora de Hidalgo, Mexico 07.12.2015 Zamora, MEX Km: 103032 Say goodbye to Ernesto and Andrea / Verabschiedung von Ernesto und Andrea The time has come to continue the travel. Ernesto helped us a lot and without his help I would have had a lot more effort to organize everything. Thanks also to Andrea for all the delicious things she cooked. Since I no longer need the central stand, I let him to Ernesto and he can put him into the museum. The hubcap I also no longer need, and save again weight. First we have to leave the city and stop soon because Leonardo needs a little break. Francesca goes along with Leonardo in the sidecar, as this is much better in city driving. So they can play with Leonardo and possibly even feed. We reach unspectacular Zamora and stay in the center. We take a walk and see that it is a beautiful city. Moreover, just now there is a festival where a lot can be seen with traditional clothes.

Special people / Spezielle Leute

Special people / Spezielle Leute
Gudalajara, Mexico
Gudalajara, Mexico 01.12.2015 Guadalajara, MEX Km: 102822 Special people / Spezielle Leute Because we are not so flexible with Leonardo, Steph comes to us. Steph is just on a fantastic travel around the world and she wants to ride on all continents of the world (she got Antarctica already!). Right now she’s is traveling with Shan from New Zealand and together they ride Mexico up. It’s fantastic how this woman has managed to ride the motorcycle in Antarctica without there being streets there and she had no idea how she comes back to South America. A very motivating meetings and it proves once again that for an “Around the World Tour” a small motorbike is a super choice for. In addition, the Red Honda CRF 250 also looks great. I wish Steph and Shane all the best and safe travel. (http://www.stephmoto-adventurebikeblog .com) Ernesto organizes a meeting in a private motorcycle museum in Guadalajara. We are received from the ‘Motorrad Fedederacion Mexico’ and we get member as ‘International Ambassador’ of the Federation. Wow! In a nice ceremony we get a certificate and an identity card. Thanks to all for the unique membership and that we got to know all of the great people. The next day I decided to check the suspension of motorbikes. For some time, the suspension feels no longer well. This I had been to Australia and have to do a service. Ernesto help me to find a suitable mechanic and I go to a Frenchman who worked in the Dakar Rally as a mechanic, he rode for the Sidecar Motocross World Championship and has been traveling with a 50cc motorbike through Africa. It quickly becomes clear that the shock has an oil leak. The mechanic changes the X-ring and refill oil. However, the suspension is still too weak and the next day we change the shims and use thick oil. I’m mounting a protective sheath around the spring so that no more dirt destroys the x-ring. In addition we change the front springs and note that the bush slider are completely worn out. So the work continues and I order one time more some spare parts.

A lot of work and coincident / Viel Arbeit und Zuf
Gudalajara, Mexico
Gudalajara, Mexico 29.11.2015 Guadalajara, MEX Km: 102822 A lot of work and coincident / Viel Arbeit und Zufälle We’re going to Guadalajara and to seek a sprocket for the motorbike. In the first shop I find none, and they cannot help me. In the second they give me the addresses of various Honda Shops. In the meantime are lots of people around the motorbike or better around the sidecar. This is because we stand out and all would like to see the sidecar.
Then arrives someone else and says he is the president of “Motorcycle Federacion Mexico”. His name is Ernesto and he offered me to take me to the Honda dealer and I owner of the shop. I think this is a good idea and I will follow him immediately. Francesca is very disagree, because the little one is hungry and wants to get some sleep. But we drive off, because this is a unique opportunity. Unfortunately, they don’t have the sprocket in stock, but due to Ernesto’s relationships, they want to produce one for me in the Honda factory just outside the town. Wow, an original Honda spare part produces just for me.
Then Ernesto invites us to his house where we can stay. This is great, because I can do all the other work I have. When we arrive at him, I cannot really do the necessary work. There is always something going on and I would like to meet tomorrow with a motorbike rider.

Tequila / Tequila

Tequila / Tequila
Tequila, Mexico
Tequila, Mexico 27.11.2015 Tequila, MEX Km: 102668 Tequila / Tequila Unfortunately, it rains from time to time today, but we still continue south. Because of the rain Francesca and Leonardo ride along in the sidecar. This has other advantages, she can feed him and sleep while riding. Suddenly we are in Tequila! Yes exactly, this Tequila. The town is surrounded by fields of agave from which tequila is made. There is just the tequila festival and so is much celebrated and a lot of fireworks. We make a city tour and are looking for a Patisserie. Mexicans love sweets and they’re extremely cheap here. So we buy a whole bag full with sweets. Even the tequila is cheap. You can buy a 5 liter bottle for 6.55 US$. Will probably be not the best, but it’s cheap. We renounce a Tequila orgy that Francesca still breastfeeding and I drink since a longer time almost no alcohol. Let’s see how long I can resist …. Also einen ganzen Sack voll kaufen.

The Great Crossing / Die grosse Überfahrt

The Great Crossing / Die grosse Überfahrt
El Rosario, Mexico
El Rosario, Mexico 25.11.2015 El Rosario, MEX Km: 102280 The Great Crossing / Die grosse Überfahrt Unfortunately Francesca and I don’t have the same idea how Leonardo has to sleep. In the parents’ bed that sometimes is very small? On the ground, which is often dirty? In a separate bed, which costs more? Camping, where Francesca feel unwell? Again and again, we have a discussion without that we have found a solution. Let’s see if we can find a solution later … But we are pleased that the travel continues today and we drive to the harbor. We are early enough and so boarding is without stress. We have the luxury of a cabin, as there is a night ride and Francesca and Leonardo feel more comfortable in the cabin. Until it gets dark, we spend most of our time on the deck and talk with many Mexicans. It is also a good opportunity to ask the locals where it is unsafe and we better not go through. It seems that in the southwest (Michoacan and Guerrero) it is not recommended to travel. This region shuns even the Mexicans from other states.
The night on the ferry is quiet and we can all sleep well. In the morning we go back to the deck and noted that Leonardo is the superstar. Everyone wants to play with him. It amazes me how open and welcoming are the Mexicans. Even the men have no fear of contact and want Leonardo hold.
But then the crossing over and we reach Mazatlan. I then get a road atlas from one of the Mexican and we go then further south.

Waiting / Warten

Waiting / Warten
La Paz, Mexico
La Paz, Mexico 23.11.2015 La Paz, MEX Km: 102179 Waiting / Warten Our ferry leaves the next week and so we have to wait. But it is also a good thing because some rest is also good for us but also for Leonardo.
Unfortunately, I’m still a little sick, that I have no motivation for 3 days to leave the hotel. We make from time to time some walks to the beach but nothing more. Because we have enough time, we make burritos and tacos, but as in other countries it is more expensive to cook for you, instead of eating at a street restaurant.
Meanwhile, come with me bored, but there is no other ferry and we have to wait until tomorrow. But then we go…

It's unable to continue /Es geht nicht mehr weiter

It's unable to continue /Es geht nicht mehr weiter
La Paz, Mexico
La Paz, Mexico 18.11.2015 La Paz, MEX Km: 102159 It is unable to continue / Es geht nicht mehr weiter We have to ride again 200km, that we reach La Paz. Now, we made more than 1800 kilometer, the peninsula down and reach the end of the peninsula. This means that we can’t ride further. Well, for sure there is a way, go back to the north or take the ferry. We opt for the ferry and try to buy tickets. This is once again a more complex matter:
I go first to the Office of the operating company that asks me if I have the permit. Yes I have. Then she wants to passport that I forgot at the hotel. I’m going back again and bring all documents. Then she says that this is the permit for Visa said, but not for the vehicle. Since I have none, I have to drive to the port and buy a. Since I do not know where I want, I go first in the port area where someone helps me and shows the correct way to the office. Then I have to pay 25 Peso for parking!!! The Office I find then very quickly, but have to wait half an hour until someone comes along. The wife is very helpful and provides all the necessary documents. But she still needs copies of the passport and vehicle registration. For this purpose, I have to give to another office and they make the copies. Then I want to buy a ticket and have to go to the harbor area again. The pretty woman at the counter said that I have to bring the motorbike on the scales first. They want to weigh and ask for 77 pesos!!! Well, back to buy the tickets. Unfortunately, then she charged me too much on the credit card and has to pay out the difference in cash. But this is ok. Since I have the tickets I will immediately go back. But because I’m in the harbor area, I come out only through the official exit. This means it’s like a border crossing and I have to pass, police and military check point. Unfortunately, just a ferry arrived and a huge traffic jam has formed. That means waiting… When police control they ask for the documents, but I do not trust them and give them only copies. Amazingly, they accept the copies. At the military check point I can tell him that I had just bought tickets and have not arrived by ferry. So they let me pass. At the end there’s a Bio-Security and spray something to the tire. I make him clear don’t spray my bike, because of course the will also money. Then I drive back to the hotel to rest. Time to buy tickets: 6 hours!

We are reaching the limit /Wir erreichen das Limit

We are reaching the limit /Wir erreichen das Limit
Loreto, Mexico
Loreto, Mexico 13.11.2015 Loreto, MEX Km: 101724 We are reaching the limit / Wir erreichen das Limit We continue south and the landscape is varied. Mountains, plains, desert and millions of cactus are the most important things. Unfortunately, there is more and more wind and of course this is always from the front or the side. Because of the wind we continue and don’t stop at one of the many beautiful beaches on the way to Loreto. Unfortunately Francesca is no longer motivated to Camping. Of course I understand that it is a little harder for her, but that she no longer want to camp makes me a little sad.
We notice that we’ve reached the limit with the number of kilometers a day. 150 Km are ok for Leonardo. Today it is a little over 200 km which is a bit too much. Because of this we decide for a rest day.
In Loreto we travel in a day trip to the mountains and meet a nice couple from France. They cycle from North- to South America. Unfortunately, the short chat is a little too long and Leonardo getting nervous in the sidecar. We try to drive a little, but must soon stop again. Now helps only one thing, Francesca and Leonardo have to go together in the sidecar. It is also a good possibility that Francesca can hear and feel how it is for Leonardo in the boot. She say, when I ride with 50 km/h, it is so pleasant that she fall almost asleep. With 70 km/h it starts to become a little louder, but this is not a problem because I usually drive at 60 km/h.

Be a family / Familie sein

Be a family / Familie sein
Somewhere, Mexico
Somewhere, Mexico 09.11.2015 Somewhere, MEX Km: 100842 Be a family / Familie sein It goes on the Baja to the south and the villages get smaller and the distances longer. So we have to drive over 300 km without a hotel is available. This means camping, because we do not want to drive as long as a day with Leonardo. Normal we ride about 150km with a longer break in between and after two days of driving at least one day of rest. We found a wonderful place not far from the road, surrounded by many large cacti. In this fantastic scenery I cook spaghetti and then we lie down to sleep. It is in that night very cold (~ 10 degrees Celsius) and so everyone is sleeping not so well.
The next night in a hotel is not that great as well and this ends in a bad mood that Francesca Leonardo ruthlessly defended and treated me like an idiot. Well, being Father!
Then we slowly start with solid food for the little one. Because we don’t have a blender and Industrial food we don’t like, I’m cooking carrots which I then chop and mash a bit. It has thereby still some bigger pieces, but that was probably when the Neanderthals already like that.

New country (no 36) / Neues Land (Nr. 36)

New country (no 36) / Neues Land (Nr. 36)
Rosarito, Mexico
Rosarito, Mexico 05.11.2015 Rosarito, MEX Km: 100435 New country (no 36) / Neues Land (Nr. 36) After I got in San Diego, the brake pads for the sidecar, we buy a new helmet and a rain Dress for Francesca. Then we decide to go to Mexico today and not as planned the following day.
Crossing the border seems to be no big deal. However, the customs officer pulls us over and they want to control everything. With strict and firm voice she asks what we carry in all the bags. Then she wants to control the side car and she realizes that there is a baby and once the dam is broken. She finds Leonardo very sweet and smiles at him constantly. From then on, she has a very nice voice and is super friendly. She shows me where immigration is and also there are all extremely helpful and want Leonardo even into their arms. It seems that a baby is an advantage here 🙂
When we are looking for a hotel in Rosarito and Francesca negotiate the price, she calls me and tells me I should come with Leonardo and show him! She is not stupid and has quickly learned that, the people in Mexico love childrens she get with Leonardo an extra discount 🙂 The next day I quickly an oil and candles changes, adjust valves, Replace Pads at the sidecar and everything necessary, that we are ready for the next 10’000Km.

Is it dangerous in the US / Gefährliche USA ?

Is it dangerous in the US / Gefährliche USA ?
San Diego, CA
San Diego, CA 03.11.2015 San Diego, USA Km: 100347 Is it dangerous in the US? / Ist es in den USA gefährlich? The question appeared for quite some time. If we tell to someone that we go to Mexico, most say in the US, that it is dangerous there, and we must be careful. Then we see the police, which is equipped with bullet-proof vests and armed to the teeth. I wonder if it’s here in the US really so dangerous that the police have to walk around like that? In front of a jewelry store I saw a security man who is armed as well. I remember the bazaar of Tabriz (Iran). There are more than 50 jewelry shops where many kilos of gold are stored and I have not seen a single security guard or police.
In the US, are most people in prison in percentage of the populations. But this does not mean that there are most crimes. I feel like in many countries (eg. Iraq and Iran). We have a false image of these countries, as the news report the negative and bad side only. This is also true for the US. I feel safe and meet a lot of nice, helpful and friendly people.
Also interesting are the safety of a school bus. So the all traffic must stop, when someone gets out of the school bus. This is one of the laws that make the school bus as the safest transport around the world. Too bad, that the saved lives are then compensated with rampages at universities….

The first 100’000 km / Die ersten 100’

The first 100’000 km / Die ersten 100’
Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles, CA 01.11.2015 Los Angeles, USA Km: 100000 The first 100’000 km / Die ersten 100’000 Km Meanwhile, we arrived in Los Angeles. First I try to buy new tires and find the right shop. By the way I find out that the brake pads of the sidecar must be replaced. The only way is to order the brake pads, what is good because I can send them to the next town on our trip. There I can pick you up in a few days.
Then we look for a new tent that is bigger and waterproof. We are considering whether we want to buy a very cheap, but finally we decide for one from the middle price segment. We also find a suitable mattress for Leonardo and a small mosquito net where he will be protected from the mosquitoes.
On the way to the campsite shop we past Hollywood by chance. The drive through Beverly Hills is great and relaxing. Then we go back to ‘the Valley’ and we are preparing to go on tomorrow.
The next day it goes on very special, because after a few kilometers on the freeway I covered the first 100,000 kilometers on my trip. Wow!
We will celebrate a little later, but first we are heading further south, but for how long?

Highway 1/ Highway 1

Highway 1/ Highway 1
Somewhere, CA
Somewhere, CA 28.10.2015 Somewhere, USA Km: 99439 Highway 1/ Highway 1 We continue south and decide to drive along the coast. We enjoy the ride on Highway 1 and we remember to the Great Ocean Road in Australia and mock something about it, because here it’s many times more beautiful, larger and more attractive (Sorry for all Australia fans).
Somewhere on the way we stop and have a picnic. Unfortunately a little too long, because it is late and we must look for a motel. And I’m a little disappointed, because all motels are owned by West-Indians and these are really rude, or the Americans are so friendly?
Unfortunately the prices are extremely high for us with at least $ 50 per room. The next night we stay on a camping to trying out, whether Leonardo likes to stay in the tent or not. Again, the prices are very high here too. We realize that we need a new, larger tent. In addition, even a mattress for Leonardo and then you can start properly.
And we realize that we forgot to buy diapers and we have just 2 pieces left and these must be enough for the next ~ 18 hours. With improvise something it will work out somehow. Let’s see how…. Mal sehen….
